The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure Plot Recap

Rescuing bandits from a raft, Captain Hae-rang (Han Hyo Joo) takes in Wu Mu-chi (Kang Ha Neul) along with his men on her ship. Retrieving the tusk Mu-chi and Mak-yi (Lee Kwang Soo) tried to run away with, a code on it is deciphered.

Led by Hae-rang, they enter a cave only to discover silver bottles, to which Mu-chi claims that the top treasures of Goryeo are gold bars. Bu Heung-su (Kwon Sang Woo), who also discovered the cave, encounters Hae-rang’s group. Despite the attack, Mu-chi and the others escape safely, but Mak-yi loses the map he tried to keep.

Claiming to know the way to Inazuma island, Hae-rang’s role as a captain is transferred to Mak-yi. Their ship is challenged by the waves and lightning, but they survive and arrive at the island.

Determined to bring to Hae-rang the treasure, Mu-chi reaches the mountain top that is frequently struck by lightning. Bu Heung-su’s troop also arrives, leading into a battle of the two over the goblin mask which is the final key to the treasure.

Seeing a penguin with gold, Mak-yi follows its league along with the fallen goblin mask, and is led to the ship where the treasure is. Although their ship is bombed, Hae-rang successfully saves her people in the ship filled with treasure, and Mu-chi also wins his battle with Heung-su.

Surviving altogether, Hae-rang regains her role as a captain and kisses Mu-chi after hearing his plans of staying.

The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure Peak Points

Strong and Reliable Female Captain

Unfazed with the impending threats at the sea, Hae-rang is a fierce captain, who is unafraid to confront people who are a hindrance to her ship’s collective goals. She manages her people well, leading not only the ship, but also her people in the right direction.

Embodying her role as a captain, she takes responsibility for her people, and ensures their safety. Despite her appearance outside, she has a warm side that looks out for other people, even taking them on her ship.

Compared to the leadership of other captains presented in the movie, her competence and heart that is ready to serve her people stand out.

Lighthearted Treasure Hunt with Powerful Cast

Even with the numerous action scenes, the movie still maintained its light tone throughout the story’s progress. Having all those elements combined, the adventure engages its viewers as if they are part of the journey.

Furthermore, the portrayal of each member of the cast can be appreciated as they establish their character’s presence in the story with impact. Lee Kwang Soo’s detailed facial expressions never fail to evoke comedy and laughter.

Adding to that, Chae Soo Bin and Sehun’s commendable delivery of their characters in their scenes together can leave a lasting impression on the viewers.

Emphasis on the True Qualities of a Leader

More than the entertainment value it brings, the movie also offers various representations of leaders on how they treat their people. These may be observed in Hae-rang, Mak-yi, and Bu Heung-su.

Establishing the ideal qualities of a leader, Hae-rang has proven her competence while also looking out for the safety of each person under her. Her personal identity remains intact even though her leadership is anchored on what she can do for the people.

With visible selfishness, Mak-yi and Bu Heung-su have highlighted the negative aspects of a leader. For Mak-yi, he lacks foresight and sees his people like slaves. On the other hand, Bu Heung-su may be strategic, but treats his people at his disposal.

The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure Movie Musings

Having a treasure hunt that is filled with adventure, comedy, action, and sprinkles of romance – enjoyment is guaranteed while watching this movie. As it offers everything, the movie could familiarize or introduce viewers to this type of genre and theme of treasure hunting while being a source of entertainment.

Serving its viewers with plentiful action and comedy, it is impressive how romance still found its way in the plot. Nonetheless, it has still added to the story’s entertainment value. A balanced tone where a mix of lighthearted and engaging scenes also sparks inspiring lessons of a great leader.

All of them searching for treasure had various reasons for desiring it, but in the end, we see that it is granted to people with the least destructive purpose. Rather than being in the hands of a greedy person who wants to start a new kingdom, wealth has been distributed to the masses.

Brief backstories of the characters are presented, and I honestly wanted to see more of their story before and after their treasure hunt. However, given the movie’s title, it is reasonable that the story only covers a portion of their quest for treasure.

All in all, the voyage has been fascinating to watch as it also implies a relevant discussion on what constitutes a great leader. Given that it is action-packed and light to watch, The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure could be an adventurous movie to bond over on the weekends with family and friends.

The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure is now available on Netflix.
