Set in 1995 when globalization is in the dawning stage in South Korea, Samjin Company English Class is a gutsy story that screams girl power!
Inspired by real events, the film depicts the story of three women working at a big corporation. Aspiring for promotion, like their fellow employees they sign up for the English class offered by the company.
If they score over 600 points, they will be promoted. But when they discover the weight of phenol leak in one of the company’s factories; they decide to be whistle-blowers against their superiors who connived with global companies. Through their united effort, they not only save the company they spent their youth on. But they also defied the prejudice on the stigma as high school graduates working in a huge business.

Samjin Company English Class Musings
Go Ah Sung, Esom, and Park Hye Su couldn’t be more fitting to their roles as Ja-young, Yoo-na and Bo-ram. Their way of interpreting their character perspectives was all well-thought. Thus, bringing the vibrancy of the story to an engrossing level.
Emphasizing office world disparity that is still an ongoing concern at any workplace setup, the movie strikes meaningful career lessons. Among those, are the two lines from Chairman Oh that got my attention.
“Don’t think that your world exists within the boundary set by others. Always do things that you enjoy.”
“Is the world getting worse? Back in the days, the sky, people, and others exist harmoniously. But people nowadays only care about themselves, and society is rotting. Even so, one must not say, ‘things were so better in the old days’ so recklessly, it’s irresponsible to say for those who never lived it. Just as it was an important time for me, I hope it’s just as beautiful to others.”
As time changes, there would be alterations in the corporate world to better the situation and keep the business world thriving. At the same time, there are permanently established realities, such as corruption and discrimination on educational attainment.
That’s the sad part when structured organizations overlook skills and competence over qualifications that do not validate efficiency.
Inspiring not just women but corporate workers with the same situation, Samjin Company English Class ponders on career purpose. It encourages us to think beyond the meaning of keeping a job. If it is just a means to survive, or it is a true commitment to advocate the products or services the business offers.
Spiritedly encouraging, the swift-paced story of the female employees of Samjin Company is sure-fire motivating.
