The 8th Night will be arriving on Netflix on July 2. Ahead of the premiere, the cast met the press before its first showing.
Netflix held a media conference for the upcoming South Korean mystery-thriller movie The 8th Night.
The film follows the story of the retired exorcist Park Jin Su (Lee Sung Min). Two thousand years ago, two beings were locked up to prevent harm to humans.
Years later, the protector of the casket monk Ha-Jeong (Lee Eol), realizes it’s awakened. Ha-jeong and the other monk Cheong Seok (Nam Da-Reum) seek Park Jin Su to track and stop these beings from wreaking havoc.
Director Kim’s Incorporation of Buddhism
Director Kim Tae Hyung shares some of the details of the film. According to him.
“The movie intro is a story that was created and imagined from the fact that there might have been a monster among them when Shakyamuni preached 2,500 years ago.” He continued, “So I thought it would be good to start with a little fairy tale story, and I wanted a fairy tale but likely story, so I used the ancient Indian Sanskrit.”
In Buddhism, The 8th day is symbolic because it’s the day the zen monks celebrate the enlightenment Buddha gave them.
Director Kim uses this tradition of Buddhism in this film. The plot of this story threads on a ‘destroyer’ who will come to earth to havoc.
Preparations of the Lead Stars
Lee Sung Min will portray the ‘destined exorcist’. He must protect the seal that is restraining in “that which not be awakened”.
The actor also shared his preparation and insights about his character and the movie. He tries to adapt to the environment of his character.
“Because Park Jin Su is a retired exorcist. We had several conversations with the monk. We tried to listen to their advice about the world view of our film has and whether it is possible what we were trying to express in this film.”
He also explains the difference between The 8th Night to other movies with the same genre. The movie offers enlightenment about bad things in one’s life, something that most horror movies leave behind.
“In most Horror movies, the devil or Satan comes out and ends with exorcism. But the outward story of this movie is just a big skeleton, and the heart of this movie is enlightenment. The fact that the black and red eyes symbolized in the movie are sealed in our hearts in a way expounds the realization that it symbolizes pain and suffering.”
Transforming into violent crime detective Kim Ho Tae is Park Hae Joon. He investigates seven corpses that will lead into the mysteries.
He said in the press conference that “Since everyone hated my character in The World Of The Married, I will show the viewers my decent side in this film. My character here as Detective Kim is so much like me in real life.”
Both well-known young actors Kim Yoo Jung and Nam Da Reum will demonstrate mature acting in this film.
Kim Yoo Jung plays Ae-ran, the girl with secrets, who is intricately involved in the mystery of the stepping stone. She said it’s hard to reveal what is her real role in this film. But what we can expect from her is that she gives her full passion for playing Ae-Ran.
“I filmed this work just two years ago, and it was the first film I filmed when I became an adult at that time. It was meaningful to me to be able to work with my seniors, so it was fun and it was a good experience.”
Then, Nam Da Reum portrays the young monk Cheong-seok. He will notify Park Jin Su about the awakening of the beings. And gives warmth to the film with his visual.
“Cheong-seok is a young monk who just came out into the world, so he tried to show a bright and pure figure. So I acted in a higher tone and I paid more attention to show a cute side through my eyebrows.”
Director Kim concluded the whole conference by leaving a remark that triggers the viewers to watch the movie.
“Many people enjoy watching horror movies because they’re watching unfamiliar things. Our film is much more than that fun that you can get.”
The 8th Night exclusively streams on Netflix beginning July 2.
