The revered seasoned actress scored an amazing feat for herself and South Korea’s film industry.
For her performance as Soon-ja in MINARI, Youn Yuh Jung wins the honor for Actress in a Supporting Role in the recent 93rd Academy Awards.
Amazing the viewers with her wit, she left a lasting impression with her award acceptance speech. She even had an adorable conversation with Brad Pitt who presented her award. The popular Hollywood actor is the production company that backed up MINARI.
She cutely quips finally meeting him since she did not see him when they filmed in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Appreciating her MINARI family and director Lee Isaac Chung for the amazing film opportunity, she also praised her fellow nominees.
“Five candidates played different roles in their respective films. I was just more fortunate. How would I compete with a great actor like Glenn Claus?” she said.
Not forgetting her own family, she also expressed thankfulness for her supportive sons. She said, “My two sons always tell me to go to work, but all of this is because of the children’s nagging. After working hard, I received such an award.”
In addition, she makes a heartwarming tribute to her first director.
“Thanks to director Kim Ki-young. He is the first director to direct my first film. He is a genius director. If he is still alive, he would have been happy with the award.”
A Downpour Of Congratulations From Junior Actors
Celebrating their senior’s victory, a few actors who have worked with Youn Yuh Jung conveyed happiness for their senior’s feat.
Kim Hye-soo wrote “Congratulations!” on his Instagram immediately after Youn Yuh Jung received the award. She quoted a line that Youn said in the past show they worked together. “It’s my first time living. I’m 67 years old.”

Choi Woo Sik, who worked with her in tvN’s Youn’s Stay also relayed his thoughts.
“I sincerely congratulate you on your award teacher. Even while watching the broadcast, it was something everyone wanted and wished for the most. “I hope you are always healthy and you continue to do a lot of activities and good works.”
Park Seo Joon, who appeared in the same program, also said revealed how Youn Yuh Jung was always respectful. “It seems that Grandma Soon-ja was more loving. Congratulations.”
