Youn Yuh Jung Makes History As First Korean Actress To Receive Academy Awards’ Nomination For Film “Minari”

Minari starring Youn Yuh Jung, Steven Yeun and Han Ye Ri notched six Oscar 2021 nominations!

An extraordinary feat for South Korea’s film industry, Youn Yuh Jung is the first Korean actress to be nominated for the American Academy Awards. The revered seasoned actress is vying for the Best Supporting Actress honor.

Notably, her portrayal in Minari earned over forty American regional critics awards apart from the renowned award-giving bodies such as Critics Choice Awards, Screen Actor Guild Awards and British Academy Film Awards.

Korean-American actor Steven Yeun also secured a Best Actor nomination. Minari also bagged nominations to Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Music Score.

The film narrates the special journey of a Korean family that settled in the United States in pursuit of achieving the “American dream” in the 1980’s.

Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, the film has been raking victories in various film award-giving bodies. It scored the Best Foreign Language Film at the recently concluded Golden Globe Awards. Accordingly, Minari also secured nominations to Screen Actors Guild Awards and 74th British Academy Film Awards.

The 93rd Academy Awards will be held on 26 April 2021 at 8 AM.
