The Walt Disney Company APAC will showcase upcoming theatrical releases from leading studios and exclusive streaming content from the world’s best creators.
In today’s Disney Content Showcase 2022 at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, Walt Disney APAC will present more than 50 upcoming theatrical productions and streaming content for 2023 to over 400 international media and partners.
Along with this, the creators and actors of Disney’s Asia Pacific original content also participated in the event, including directors and actors of the dark fantasy thriller Connect, one of the year’s most anticipated series in Korea Casino, the Japanese drama series Gannibal, and Indonesian superhero series Tira.
Disney has launched over 45 new titles in the last year through its streaming service, many of which achieved remarkable success. In particular, Big Mouth, Soundtrack #1, and In the Forest: Friendship Journey were among the top three most-watched content in APAC in their initial week of release.
Also, the amount of time spent watching Asian content has increased eightfold on Disney+ over the past year.
In addition, Luke Kang, President of The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific, mentioned that Disney is investing more in regional specificity for local narratives that are popular in particular areas or well-known to local audiences. This includes K-dramas, Japanese anime, Indonesian romantic comedies, and horror genres.
“Disney is dedicated to offering worldwide audiences content from global brands such as Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar, along with locally produced stories that resonate in each region and leverage them globally.”
Meanwhile, Walt Disney Asia Pacific also declared that they would be working more closely with Kodansha, a renowned Japanese publisher, on Japanese animated content.
Yoshinobu Noma, CEO and President of Kondasha, and Carol Choi, Head of Original Content, also expressed their excitement and delight about the collaboration. According to Choi, this may pave the way for the shift in future animation approaches in Japan.
Disney and Kodansha, who have worked together for 70 years in publishing, want to extend their partnership and bring more popular animated films to the world in the near future.
First up in this partnership is the exclusive launch of Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown Arc on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar in January.
Currently, more than 235 million people in 154 different countries are paying for subscriptions to Disney’s streaming service.
