Working on the Drama’s Creative Process
Director Lee Jin Seo shares the writer was doing something with a brain scientist character in a different genre. But his participation changed it to a refreshing bromance story.
“There have not been many dramas that have focused on the brain so far. It is special because comedic notes have been added to it.”
The director also reveals he had Jung Yong Hwa in mind for the prickly and genius character of Shin Haru.
“I didn’t think that Jung Yong Hwa had a strong acting ability because he had a reliable image in romantic stories. However, after seeing Sell Your Haunted House, my thoughts completely changed. I made the proposal right away and gratefully, he accepted it.”
Likewise, he relays Cha Tae Hyun as a national actor and a master of comedy undeniably ranked first in the role of Geum Myung-se.
“He had been playing a lot of detective roles lately, so people around him expected him to decline the offer. But on the day we were together, he accepted. I was so happy that I drank.”
Talking about the female leads he cast in the roles, Director Lee put his trust in the versatility of Kwak Sun Young to pull off Seol So-jeong’s character which undergoes a drastic personality change. Similarly, no one like Ye Ji Won can color a provocative character.
Character Preparations
Taking turns to describe their characters, the lead cast all agree to the engaging story that will bring out laughter to the small screens.
Jung Yong Hwa relays the hard work in preparing for his role. He also feels relieved because he worked together with his senior actor Cha Tae Hyun. His immersion into the character even changed his existing MBTI to a different one.
“I was attracted to the character since I hadn’t tried it before. From the beginning, it took my heart because the character has a complex growth. Even in my school days, I had never memorized like this, so it was really a challenge.”
Responding to his successive detective roles, Cha Tae Hyun focused on the value of the story. He vouches how Jung Yong Hwa’s character would be an interesting point in the story. Also, he was faithful to the script and assures a new kind of comedy that would refresh the viewers.
“The script was fun. I was also drawn to the texture of the comedy. There were times when I wanted to do this or that, and I tried a lot, but there were things that didn’t work. In the end, I realized that I have the charm that the audience and viewers want. It was burdensome to play detective roles in succession, but there are some differences and the script itself was interesting, so I chose it.”
Echoing Cha’s rave on the impressive script, Kwak Sun Young also remarked on her devotion to her latest project.
“I read the script and immediately decided to appear. I greatly sympathized with the character. The chemistry of the neuroscience team was also interesting, so I wanted to become a team member.”
Expounding on the interesting plot, Ye Ji Won relayed why she appeared in the series.
“This is the first brain science investigation comedy drama in Korea. I had fun. There were stories of various types of brain structures in the script of the drama, and while reading the script, I came to relate it to myself. It’s a completely different character from me so far, so I studied and acted accordingly.”
Bromance and Romance To Anticipate
Cha Tae Hyun did not rule out being nominated with Ye Ji Won as well considering she plays his ex-wife in the series. Adorably, he mentions that he got two best couple awards with male actors twice, Cha Tae Hyun quipped that his character interaction with Jung Yong Hwa’s character is a possible nomination.
Showing respect for his senior’s comedic mastery, Jung Yong Hwa praised him sincerely.
“I wanted to act with sunbaenim from a long time ago. While watching him all the time I thought he was ad-libbing the lines. But he did not. He is a senior actor who let me know that I was being taken care of rather than taking care of me openly, and I received a lot of help in terms of acting.”
Guaranteeing the fun of various relationships to be featured in the series, Director Lee rated Cha Tae Hyun’s and Kwak Sun Young’s chemistry 120/100 points.
“Their chemistry was so good that I wondered if it was possible to be this cute at this age. There was no need for separate directing.”
Inviting viewers to watch Brain Works, the lead cast assures big cases and small cases are included in the narrative. Focus on brain science is also expected along with the amazing cast synergy.
Brain Works will be broadcast for the first time on KBS2 at 9:50 PM. International fans can watch it on Viu.
