C-Drama Mid-Series Spotlight: “You Are My Glory” Raises Ruminative Story About Rediscovering Career Purpose While Braving Romance

you are my glory

Easily gravitating to its familiar love story, You Are My Glory has veered away to problematic relationships. Instead, it focuses on how friendship and honesty are always the starting point for a committed romance to happen.

With Yang Yang and Dilireba’s impeccable on-screen synergy, You Are My Glory soothingly sedates. Interestingly, without many plot curves, it’s easy to immerse in Yu Tu and Qiao Jing Jing’s love journey.

You Are My Glory 1st Half Recap

Based on a novel written by Gu Man, You Are My Glory chronicles the story of a top actress and aerospace engineer who were high school classmates and met again after 10 years.

When Yu Tu (Yang Yang) accidentally added Jing Jing (Dilireba) in a popular mobile game, the latter gets an idea to resolve her current brand endorsement and upcoming film venture concern.

She has been endorsing the same game, but when one of her lousy games was accidentally recorded and posted online, the company remedied it with an invitational game in which Jing Jing needs to participate.

Apparently, she got the brand deal under the impression that she’s good at playing the mobile game. When she was accidentally added by Yu Tu without knowing who she really is, they develop connections as game friends.

Having no progress with the tutorial lessons her manager’s husband was giving, she decides to reveal her true self to her old classmate and crush.

10 Years Later…

Yu Tu, who is facing a crossroad at 30, is on a break from research work as an aerospace engineer. The nagging feeling of how his career has not been progressing and not as lucrative as he hopes it could be was not the situation he hoped to be in when he was building his goals.

A consistent top student with a double major in Finance and Engineering, he faces a dilemma of taking a chance of getting a career in the financial world and starting again as an entry-level worker or keeping his research work profession that has been seemingly not taking off.

Receiving an offer from the girl he once rejected in senior high, to elevate her game techniques, he agreed and they work on improving her skills.

Along the way, the attraction inescapably hits a mutual point. However, Jing Jing’s brave declaration if they can date was denied by Yu Tu. He thinks they are not meant to be together owing to the different worlds they live in.

You Are My Glory Mid-Series Musings

I’m actually impressed on how typical the story of You Are My Glory but it managed to reel in attention with that relatable idea that career people in their 30’s and 40’s might have been going through.

Getting a job that we had envisioned when we were young is not easy to attain. Accepting the sad reality that it did not materialize is even more painful to picture. Inevitably, it affects every decision we wish to undertake that involves our future. This is exactly the spinning point of the series.

The years-later-meeting-my-first-love-again plot has always been a strong foundation for wistful love stories. Owing to that effective nostalgic card, You Are My Glory has been reaping the benefits since viewers would just find themselves rooting for the love couple to be together.

But it is really the friendship building in the narrative that makes this series stand out. The choice of not forcing out the romantic flavor with concocted imaginative heart-fluttering moments is admirable. From there, we get to see the pragmatic connection of Yu Tu and Jing-jing blossomed into sincere attachment.

Moreover, the poignant moments carried on the side of the male lead are noteworthy deviations from the usual dramatic moments given to the female lead. That particular moment when Yu Tu confronted the reality of how he was not able to give more to his parents with his genius mind was utterly heartbreaking. That you can understand his dilemma of choosing to dabble in the finance world a reasonable decision.

Thereafter, his belief that he does not deserve Jing-jing eventually haunted him. Reality speaking his inhibition is warranted because of his own self-esteem issues that ironically, his genius mind can’t salvage.

So far, there are no major detours from Gu Man’s original work. Thus, I’m really looking forward to the romantic progression soon. Hopefully, the adorable epilogues from the novel will be captured well in the drama adaptation.

Presenting a celebrity-commoner romantic story, the fascinating point capitalizes on how the hero carries the emotion of the narrative. All the while, the heroine is also attracting us with her courageous and endearing demeanor. This is my first Dilireba series and I really love that she has captured what I envisioned Jing-jing to be.

Adorable in the light scenes, her expressive face effortlessly convinces us to immerse in her love journey with Yu Tu. That painful scene when she mustered the courage to claim the love she wants only to be denied again was captivating. Beautiful in the sense that she captured how she got her own back in picking up the pieces of her broken heart.

We definitely can empathize with Yu Tu’s apprehensions. But he better make up for breaking Jing Jing’s simple loving heart twice. Yu Tu literally has a messy way of thinking when it comes to romance. As expected of people with high IQ, he tends to overthink.

In contrast, Jing-jing’s high EQ, hopefully, helps in emancipating her long-time-nervous-wreck-crush.

Eventually, if the series will follow the novel route, viewers should expect blissful heart-fluttering moments between Yang Yang and Dilireba who are so far owning their chemistry convincingly.

You Are My Glory starring Yang Yang and Dilireba runs for 32 episodes.
