Strong messages on human greed and covetousness are bound to be relayed in MBC drama Golden Spoon.
Launched today, lead stars Yook Sung Jae, Lee Jong Won and Yeonwoo attended the drama presentation. Along with them, PD Song Hyun-wook and supporting actors Choi Won Young, Choi Dae Cheol, Han Chae Ah and Son Yeo Eun are also present at the event.
Based on the popular Naver webtoon of the same name, Golden Spoon tells the life adventure of a child born in a poor family, who obtained a golden spoon. Thereafter, his fate changed with a friend, who was born into a wealthy family.
Accordingly, the series is already being evaluated as a highly anticipated work due to its novel material and unique story.
In the drama, Yook Sung Jae plays Lee Seung-cheon, an ordinary student who dreams of turning his life around with a golden spoon. He is told that his momentary choice will change his fate, and he will pay the price for it and lead a tumultuous life.
Thanks to his cleverness he entered an elite school for the upper class. But he was assaulted by the bitter taste of life. Thus, he hopes to have the “golden” spoon to survive at school.
Seung-cheon will tell a richer story by intertwining with Na Joo-hee (Jung Chaeyeon), the daughter of a chaebol with a brave heart and an upright personality.
Golden Spoon’s Provocative Message
Expounding his creative process in Golden Spoon, PD Song emphasized conveying each person’s desire and reality in an honest fashion.
Interestingly, the director also shared an anecdote of how he thought Golden Spoon is a daily soap opera or historical drama. He notes that the series adaptation will be nice to compare with the webtoon.
As the core character in the story, Yook Sung Jae discussed his thoughts about his first leading role.
“I’ve done a lot of light and lively characters. I thought I wanted to broaden the character ranges I can work on.”
He added, “I was looking forward to it as much as the fans waited for my discharge. It put more responsibility and passion into it. Golden Spoon is 2022 for me. I poured effort and it has a lot of attachment to me.”
Le Jong Won plays the character of Hwang Tae-yong whose life will be switched with Seung-chun. He expresses the hard work he put into the character.
“This drama is a work that I concentrated on the most this year. Through this drama, I want to become an actor who shows the intersection of life between a rich and poor.”
When asked what kind of actor he would like to be called, he chose ‘a thousand faces’ as his modifier.
Yeonwoo is another character who takes on the role of Oh Yeo-jin, the personification of the desire to become richer even though she has a gorgeous appearance and not lacking in financial resources.
Describing her preparations, Yeonwoo shared how her character is her exact opposite. Because of that, she was happy to take on the challenge. She also takes pride in the cast relationship.
“I really liked the synergy and energy. Besides acting, they are friends I can communicate with comfortably.”
Jung Chaeyeon, who could not attend the production presentation due to an injury, also expressed her feelings in a video message. She conveyed excitement in greeting the viewers and wanting to be together with her costars.
Golden Spoon airs every Friday and Saturday on MBC for 16 episodes beginning September 23.
