Upon the successful premiere of Coupang Play’s Anna, Bae Suzy talks about her character’s backstory and preparation process.
Coupang Play series Anna held an interview at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the morning of June 29. The new drama series aired its first broadcast on the 24th of this month. It was then met with good remarks from viewers and critics alike during its opening week.
In particular, Bae Suzy is delighted with the series’ positive reviews and feedback. She shared her thoughts about her character and extended her gratitude to everyone who anticipated the first broadcast of the series.
“There are a lot of good articles, the responses are very good, and I’m happy to hear that people around me are also seeing it. There are a lot of people who ask because they are curious, so I am thinking happily.”
Bae Suzy is well-loved for the roles she played in her past projects, including the hit series Start-Up and While You Were Sleeping. Now, her portrayal as the main characters ” Yumi” and “Anna” marks her homecoming to the small screens. Being the lead star in this June 2022 drama empowered her to solidify her position as an actress once again.
Becoming Anna
Coupang Play’s new series depicts the life of a woman living a completely different life, that began because of a lie. Bae Suzy plays the role of Yumi is tired of her miserable life. Thus, becoming Anna, she lives an entirely different and wonderful life.
The actress talked about how she pondered various ways to consider how she would portray Yumi’s anxiety and concerns. According to her, after reading her script, she aims to make the viewers feel the tragic situation of her character. Hence, this will help viewers understand how she turned into Anna.
“I thought that Yumi’s childhood had to be a little sympathetic, so I could try to understand her actions even if I didn’t understand what she did when she became Anna. So, she seems to have been more concerned about Yumi’s childhood. She thought that it would be good if Yumi had a hard time with her face and things like that, so she seems to have gone to sleep the day before or made her feel tired.”
“I didn’t think of my age in this way from teens to 30s. Beyond the transition period of being caught lying, I thought that the time when the world seemed ridiculous, ‘Do these people believe this?’ is the time when Anna becomes perfect. She became bolder, and she was able to show what she wanted to show. “She took a lot of care because she thought she got used to lying as she got older.”
Sentiments & Character Resemblances
Moreover, the actress shared that she was doing her best to express her confidence through this series after deciding to take the role. Suzy told the press she was contemplating if she could do it and be the character in the series. Nonetheless, her vague confidence was boosted after realizing how she wanted to show the viewers her acting prowess. A new side of her.
“I was worried about whether I could do it, but I also had vague confidence. I thought, ‘I want to show you’, so I made a decision and then I had to create the result, so I gained vague self-confidence.”
What is more, Bae Suzy disclosed to the press that, unlike the character she is portraying in this series, she is not good at lying. The way she shared about this made the members of the press chuckle.
“I’m not good at lying. To tell a lie, you have to remember what you say, but I can’t remember what I said.”
Meanwhile, when asked about the feedback on her acting, Bae Suzy said it feels good to be rewarded for the days she spent filming the series. Additionally, she was asked about what she feels is still being dubbed as the “Nation’s First Love”. the actress shared that she likes it and does not mind still being called the nation’s first love.
“I really like ‘Nation’s First Love’. I have no desire to escape. Because humans are complex beings, they do not have only one appearance. Like Anna, all the characters live in different ways. I also have this side of myself, but I also want to show that there is also a (another) side of me.”
