The Posh Haesong Mansion In K-Drama “Adamas” Is A Striking Museum In Wonju
Adamas Opening Week Story
It was a rainy night, and thunders, one after the other, started to rumble and strike. Writer Ha Woo-shin, walking his way home from his mother’s funeral, saw an anonymous letter. Written on it is a statement saying that Lee Chang-woo, the person who killed his father, Song Soon-ho, turns out to be an innocent man.
That same night, prisoner 2006, Duk-soo, from Kangchun Penitentiary, killed his inmates and a security guard who discovered his heinous crime. After this horrendous event, protesters strike in favor of sentencing criminals to death penalties.
One month later, as Korea is soon to held its next presidential election, candidate Hwang Byung-chul continues to get the public’s approval as he supports reinstating the death penalty in the country.
During the ongoing campaign, Prosecutor Song Su-hyun was assigned by his deputy head to take the case of the Kangchun Penitentiary Massacre. However, Su-hyun chuckled and declined to do the task, for he knew it was the deputy’s tactic to support Hwang Byung-chul known to belong in the dirty world of politics.
On the other hand, his twin brother, famous writer Ha Woo-shin, takes the offer of becoming the ghostwriter for the Haesong group’s chairman, Mr. Kwon Jae-kyu.
Woo-shin then meets his brother, Su-hyun and lies to him, informing him that he will leave for a one-month trip because of his confidential job.
Meanwhile, TNC local news reporter Kim Seo-hee rushes to meet prosecutor Su-hyun; but unfortunately, she fails.
Inside the Peculiar Mansion
“You should keep everything you see or hear
in this place a secret.”
Just as Woo-shin enters the modern and sophisticated mansion, he meets the strange employees. Suspicion began to creep into his mind as he saw the house fully equipped with a high-technology security system.
Meeting Ms. Kwon, the head of the employees, Woo-shin encounters a cold welcome greeting and proceeds to have a short tour with Ms. Oh, one of the maids in the mansion. Entering his room, he was surprised to see Lee Dong-rim, his co-worker, who went unnoticed and came to work as his assistant. Woo-shin insisted Dong-rim go home, but he stayed.
After experiencing a nightmare, Woo-shin goes out of his room to take a walk, then suddenly hears a woman who cannot breathe. Woo-shin told other maids and employees about the situation, yet they did not help immediately. Strangely, their faces looked like they see these incidents often.
Going back to his room, he looked at Dong-rim and said, “What should I do? This wasn’t part of the plan.” It turns out that Woo-shin has a motive for entering the peculiar mansion.
“Nothing is illegal in this household.
We can do whatever we want.”
The day after, Woo-shin saw an opium poppy in his office and urgently went to Haesong’s garden. There he meets Eun Hye-soo, the chairman’s daughter-in-law.
Hye-soo warns Woo-shin of the danger he might be in if he stayed in the mansion, but Woo-shin does not want to leave. Right after, chairman Kwon went back home riding a helicopter and asked to meet the writer.
While talking with Mr. Kwon, Woo-shin notices they are being monitored.
Mr. Choi Tae-sung’s Cover-up
“Hands and feet are tricky to control subconsciously.
But in this adverse situation, your hands are in your pockets.
That means you’re feeling anxious.”
Later, Woo-shin goes into the woods to see Mr. Choi Tae-sung, the Chief of Security in Haesong Mansion. When Mr. Choi realizes Woo-shin blackmailed him by sending an email to his office, he confronts the writer.
Woo-shin then reveals the secret of Mr. Choi, who is surprisingly an undercover cop from the Central Investigation Division. He also reveals his ulterior motive of stealing the symbol of Haesong, the arrow with a diamond tip, Adamas.
Anxious Choi Tae-sung points his rifle at Woo-shin to threaten him. But there came a witness, Hye-soo leading them to go back inside the chairman’s office. They all say different alibies of what happened. In the end, Mr. Kwon believed Woo-shin, who said he only took a short walk in the woods.
Woo-shin again talks to Mr. Choi. The cop said that Woo-shin needs to beware of Ms. Kwon as she always gets suspicious. They both have pointed out each other’s weaknesses, yet Mr. Choi is the one who gets too intimidated.
In search of Adamas
While Woo-shin roams around the mansion, he fails to open the door of Minjo’s room, the second son of Mr. Kwon, who died because of the helicopter accident. Accidentally, Hye-soo sees him. Hye-soo, who brings her metal detector, suddenly acts up because of Woo-shin’s metal pin on his left hand.
Still in search of the Adamas, Woo-shin almost got caught by chairman Kwon as he goes inside his office. He then proceeds with interviewing Mr. Kwon.
Meanwhile, Mr. Choi secretly contacts his superior in the woods and informs him about the writer’s motive. He was tasked to get rid of him in any way possible for their undercover not to blow up.
Lee Chang Woo’s Witness
I know you’re blind to red and green.
Yet you saw the green jacket with red patterns
that Chang-woo was wearing?
Back in the prosecutor’s office, reporter Seo-hee meets prosecutor Su-hyun to warn him that if Byung-chul wins the election and legalizes the death penalty, Le Chang-woo will be executed. She insists that Chang-woo is innocent.
Prosecutor Su-hyun then decided to meet the witness in the trial of his father’s murderer. While talking with the witness, Kim Won-joong, Su-hyun caught him lying.
After the sudden visit, the witness called ARES, pleading to the company not to harass their family again like when they made him lie in court. Team A leader Lee of ARES then goes to see the other son of Mr. Kwon, Hyun-jo and informs him about the recent call. Hyun-jo orders him to take care of the situation.
Shocking Revelations
Back in the mansion, Ms. Kwon gets a piece of information from Ms. Oh as she overheard the conversation between Hye-soo and Woo-shin about the metal detector incident.
Ms. Kwon seems to be intimidated by the presence and favor of the chairman of the famous writer. She then orders Ms. Yoon, the deaf secretary of Mr. Kwon, to go and get Woo-shin’s medical record.
After seeing nothing suspicious about the record, Ms. Kwon angrily went to Woo-shin’s office and threw it at the writer. As Woo-shin held it in his hands, he realized it was fabricated.
“That is the problem. Nothing happens by coincidence here.”
Woo-shin went to the garden and knew it was Eun Hye-soo, the daughter of the Eunkook Medical Center’s director, who gave the fake medical record. He also knew Hye-soo was the one who sent the letter to him the night he went home from the funeral.
Revelation after revelation unfolds. Written actually in the letter indicates that the missing murder weapon that killed Woo-shin and Su-hyun’s father is the Adamas. That is why Woo-shin is searching for it in the first place.
Hye-soo said she heard from his husband that his father killed someone using Adamas. However, Woo-shin was surprised to know that Hye-soo is not the one who invited him to be the chairman’s ghostwriter.
Ending the scene, Su-hyun got home and was shocked to see the news of the sudden passing of Lee Chang Woo’s witness and his wife. Suddenly, a mysterious shadow behind his door appears.
Adamas Opening Week Musings
One thing is for sure, Adamas will give you the creeps. Writer Choi Tae Kang deserves applause as he perfectly established an eerie environment in the series.
Moreover, the over-the-top acting of the characters inside the mansion even heightens the uncomfortable and frightening watching experience.
Adding to this, the modern and sophisticated architecture of the Haesong mansion and the expensive arrow Adamas add an intriguing feel to the story. Combining these aspects makes the cryptic vibe of series more interesting.
Remarkably, writer Choi Tae Kang and director Park Seung Woo characterized the twins distinctly.
Woo-shin is a calm and organized person. Aside from that, he embodies the characteristics of a writer. As you would watch the drama, you can witness many scenes of him looking at his surroundings. He is extremely observant and picks up every situation quickly. Besides that, he seems to do his research well with keen detail. Clever and articulate, Woo-shin knows how to read between the lines.
On the other hand, Song Su-hyun is more of an aggressive and cheeky type. He is a prosecutor who stands for the truth and fights for justice. Although his scenes were shorter, unlike Woo-shin, we can see the differences between the two characters.
The post-production team also impressed us with how they made the twins appear on screen longer than expected. I cannot wait to see more scenes of the two sitting in one frame and how will the story progresses.
Will Woo-shin be able to steal the Adamas in the next episode? And will Su-hyun find the mystery behind Lee Chang-woo’s witness death?
Find out now and join us on our journey of unfolding truths and mysteries and watch the thrilling series Adamas every Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 pm (KST).
