K-Drama First Look: “May It Please The Court” Evinces Different Motivations of Lawyers

Two lawyers who have opposing personalities yet quasi-similar convictions are heading to courtroom adventures in May It Please The Court.

Quietly raising its why-to-watch-the-series invitation, the premiere week honestly feels prosaic. The preview of the story ahead appears conventional legal Korean drama that deals with power aspirations and revenge.

Whether the series will pick up its momentum, we shall await. But it sure was not an exciting opening week for May It Please The Court.

May It Please The Court

May It Please The Court Opening Week Story

At the top of her career game, Noh Chak-hee (Jung Ryeo Won) has everything going on well. Despite her humble law education, she is the ace lawyer of famous Jangsan law firm.

When a case she’s working on involved a friend who is dear to her; she advertently proceeds with a bold move to achieve her goal of being a partner in the firm.

The case involves a pharmaceutical company that produced contraceptive pills causing risky effects. A former employee exposed the danger of the pills, but the case was later dismissed when Lawyer Noh utilized how the CEO of the pharmaceutical company had a relationship with the whistleblower.

Her friend Sun-young who helped pay her college tuition accidentally killed her husband without remembering she did so. Her act can be traced to the adverse effects of the same pills in her latest case.

Coaching Sun-young to fake death to raise interest in the effect of the pills and not her personal story; caused significant damage to the pharmaceutical company to which Jangsan Law Firm is also affiliated.

“That’s how the world works, it is merciless to those who have nothing.”

Consequently, the law firm partner’s dream she just achieved crumbled right away when Jang Gi-do, CEO of Jangsan law firm learned of the underhand means she did to protect her friend who was indirectly involved in the case while minimizing the damage to the client she represents.

Her action led to a year suspension and CEO Jang sent her to Jungha city to serve as a public defender. His action is also to aid his political aspiration by having Lawyer Noh raise the winning rate of public defenders.

At Jungha District Court, Lawyer Noh meets the oddball Jwa Si-baek (Lee Kyu Hyung), a brilliant lawyer who chose to become a public defender. He also became Sun-young’s lawyer and vocally detested how Lawyer Noh incited her friend to fake suicide.

Placing a wall between them, Lawyer Jwa refuses Lawyer Noh’s offer to protect the environment by carpooling with her on their first day or working together. When the pharma company CEO appears in front of the office, Lawyer Noh unwillingly rides his car.

Deviously expressing his desire to bed her, she headbutts and pushes CEO Jo just as the car halted abruptly. A man came to drag the evil CEO, and he turns out to be Lawyer Jwa. Aware of the trauma his co-worker suffered, Lawyer Jwa reassured Lawyer Noh that bad people get bad karma inevitably.

At night, Lawyer Noh receives a phone call from CEO Jo with inaudible voices in the background. The next day, the wicked CEO is found dead. Suspiciously, the man who murdered him has the same watch Lawyer Jwa has.

May It Please The Court Opening Week Musings

Choosing the lead characters in switching dark and fun personas at least tinged the narrative with some inflections to the relatively generic story.

To run a dozen episodes at least gives viewers options to consider watching it still since it could be just warming up. Both Jung Ryeo Won and Lee Kyu Hyung have the ability to make stories appealing with their portrayals. Thus, this is still worth tuning in.

CEO Jang’s elaborate political dream that would involve Lawyer Noh and Lawyer Jwa is an evident loose end to tie in the series. Correspondingly, the main leads are hinted to have deeper connections involving their loved ones which Lawyer Jwa already realized.

Episode 2 ended on a cryptic note on CEO Jo’s murderer. We are sure Lawyer Noh would be roped into the situation.

We are not sure if there will be side stories involving court cases that would be included in the narrative. But it would make the story appealing if there will be relevant and relatable cases that would be inserted.

Whether the two distinctly different lawyers will continue being at odds with each other or become allies is one of the points to watch in the series.
