K-Drama First Look: “Mine” Mounts The Privileged But Anguished Inner World Of The Rich

Meeting the family members of Hyowon Group was quite entertaining in the latest tvN drama, Mine!

Add the roles of the two outsiders meant to do significant change, and you get a dose of the recently favored revenge drama genre.

Writer Baek Mi-kyung (This Is My Life, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, The Miracle We Met)  is a recent addition to my favorite screenwriter list because of her witty writing with a generous amount of humor. Her collaboration with Director Lee Na-jeong (Love Alarm, Fight For My Way, Oh My Venus) is the deal-breaker why I am covering this series.

Mine Opening Week Story

In a posh estate, Hyowon Group family lives a luxurious life. The patriarch of the family, Chairman Han, has three children and lives with his legal wife. She forever detests her husband’s other woman, who gave birth to a son deemed the most capable of Chairman Han’s children.

That son is Han Ji-yong (Lee Hyun Wook) who married Seo Hi-soo (Lee Bo Young), a former top actress. She becomes the new mother of Ji-yong’s son whose birth mother died because of an accident.

Suffering extreme inferiority complex, Chairman Han’s oldest son Jin-ho (Park Hyuk Kwon) has to thank his capable and rich wife Jung Seo-hyun (Kim Seo Hyung) for covering his incompetence well. Little did he know that Seo-hyun carries an emotional strain that cannot be appeased. Her heart beats for another person, who is also a woman.

When a new tutor and a new maid arrive in the household, the daughters-in-law are not aware that their lives will change as they face a battle to keep what they want and deserve.

Mine Opening Week Musings

Throwing a lavish set, wardrobe, and interesting sketches of characters, tvN drama Mine convinced me to add it on my really overflowing coverage. Honestly, revenge drama with problematic marital scenarios is not my cup of tea. However, the curiosity to watch the secrets revealed is not to be missed. Thus, I’m giving it a go.

Even the trivial talks of the house workers can make you smile. But Jin-hee (Kim Hye Hwa) and her “bakery rage” is the ultimate scene-stealer in the opening week. I love the dynamic communication of Hi-soo and Seo-hyun, who are both mutually holding secret grudge, at the same time honestly care for each other.

With Teacher Ja-kyeong (Ok Ja Yeon) evidently marked to be brewing hell and new maid Yu-yeon (Jung Yi Seo) going to cause inadvertent trouble for the young master of the house Soo-hyeok (Cha Hak Yeon); a downpour of emotions is expected to erupt as the story goes on.

If you like dramas like Penthouse and The World of the Married, this new tvN series takes the same vibe. Faintly touching on a tragic incident, the narrative is bound to be chronicled from the perspective of Sister Emma. Receiving emotional confessions from Hi-soo and Seo-hyun, Mine flows to a unique narrative.

Brandishing an intriguing opening week, Mine pushed a hefty amount of interest mainly driven to know more about the Han family members. More than taking a peek at the favored lives of affluent people, this series is keener to deconstruct the anguish that comes with their so-called “entitled life”.

Mine airs every Saturday and Sunday on tvN. Global fans can watch it on Netflix.
