Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist Opening Week Highlights

“Head Acupuncturist Yoo Se-yeob of the Medical Office will be removed from the office and will be ordered to never step foot on Hanyang again.”

Showing great potential in the medicinal field since he was young, Yoo Se-yeob (Kim Min Jae) passes and topped different medical exams, becoming known in Hanyang. He knows acupuncture like the palm of his hand and is popular with women because of his looks.

Whenever he’s treating a patient, Se-yeob can immediately know its illness and what treatment he will perform. He also gained a title from the King as the “Divine Needle” for treating his son when the Royal Psychiatrists had given up on treating the prince.

His outstanding skills threaten the officials who planned on removing him from his position and the Royal Palace. Furthermore, they secretly poison the King which leads to the abnormal deterioration of his boils.

Their plan on killing the King and getting rid of Se-yeob succeeded as the King personally asked Se-yeob to cure him but instead, Se-yeob killed him in doing so. In addition, they also killed Se-yeob’s father who found solid evidence that the King was poisoned.

On the other hand, the current King only exiled Se-yeob from Hanyang since he knows that he’s the only one who can uncover the truth.

“Do not break yourself. You are not the one who breaks. Are you not one who saves?… You will save many, so stay alive, okay?”

With his assistant, Man-bok (Ahn Chang Hwan), Se-yeob wanders in different places with no will to live and dreams to chase. Due to this, he decided to end his life by jumping on a cliff, but a woman interrupted him.

Known for showing great interest in investigations, Lady Seo Eun-woo (Kim Hyang Gi) accidentally saw Se-yeob at the edge of the cliff. She persuaded and left a powerful message to him that changed Se-yeob’s mind.

However, Se-yeob still suffers from his trauma and has given up on healing patients. Despite wanting to help, his traumas hinder him from doing acupuncture.

A year later, he met a local physician in Sorak Village, Gye Ji-han (Kim Sang Kyung), that will soon become a tool for helping him to start treating patients again. Additionally, Se-yeob also met Eun-woo again, but this time, Eun-woo tries to end her life.

“From now on, my name is Poong. I am Yoo Se-poong from now on. A name is just a name after all. If I can be of help to someone, I do not care what people call me.”

Despite wanting to save her life, Se-yeob decided to bring her to Physician Gye instead. Se-yeob’s action made it clear that he wants to cure people again. Physician Gye grabbed this chance to make him work in his clinic.

After the two of them saved Eun-woo, from drowning, she tries to end her life again but Se-yeob was determined to save and heal her heart. They later found out that her mother-in-law accuses Eun-woo of killing her husband and mentally abuses her.

Ye-seob proved that Eun-woo’s mother-in-law is poisoning her. He made a deal with Eun-woo’s mother-in-law so Eun-woo will be freed from her. Like how Eun-woo convinced him not to take his own life, Ye-seob also succeeded in changing her mind.

Furthermore, Ye-seob and Eun-woo succeeded in helping Granny, who suffers from dementia and calls Ye-seob by the name “Poong.” Her son Poong (Lee Sang Yi) doesn’t regard her as his mother.

Poong realized how much her mother loved him as Granny showed the gifts she never got the chance to give him. With what Granny showed, Ye-seob decided to give life another chance as “Yoo Se-poong.”
