You Raise Me Up

Launching a different taste of a “first love” story, You Raise Me Up targets people currently acknowledging or in denial of self-esteem issues.

Meeting your first love to the image you did not expect him to be, spins the story of You Raise Me Up. An engaging love triangle is also up for fans of Yoon Shi Yoon, Ahn Hee Yeon and Park Ki Woong.

You Raise Me Up Opening Week Recap

Everything is going downhill to Do Yong-sik (Yoon Shi Yoon). For years, he has been struggling to pass the civil service exam. Hence, he does not have a regular job and juggles part-time works unbefitting of an able man in 30’s like him.

Unfortunately, not only his life is hitting rock bottom, but he also confronts a problem with his manhood. When he visits a clinic to have his erectile dysfunction be checked, life could not be any more unfair because the doctor set to treat him is his very first love, Lee Ru Da (Ahn Hee Yeon).

Now Ru-da has recently broken up with Ji-hyuk (Park Ki Woong), a big-shot psychologist who possesses the perfect ideal man resume. However, his temperament and hubris is also perfectly hopeless. When he heard Ru-da said that her first love is way better than him, it stroke a chord in his huge ego.

So, when he connects Yong-sik to be Ru-da’s first love, he ploys a plan by offering his professional help. His plan is to expose Yong-sik’s initial lies of having a great life as Ru-da advertised.

He also deliberately let Ruda knows that Yong-sik’s self-respect issues are incurable. Determined to help her first love, Ru-da vows to successfully treat his erectile dysfunction. Ji-hyuk obliges to the taunt and promises a neat apology if she will be successful.

On the brink of jumping from a rooftop, Ru-da stops Yong-sik from committing suicide and strongly offers her help so his manhood can work again.

You Raise Me Up Opening Week Musings

Coming from your first love, “let me treat your erectile dysfunction,” is definitely a courageous pledge even in the imaginary K-Drama world. It’s obvious that Ru-da will be taking charge of the grit while Yong-sik is in charge of the emotions in the series. This role reversal seems perfectly tailored to both Ahn Hee Yeon and Yoon Shi Yoon.

Typically, people have a special regard for their first love, no matter how bad or vague it turned out. So far, we can conclude that the lead pair in the series were each other’s, secret first love. Moreover, we can also deduce how their roles will be switching at present time.

Unlike the usual wistful vibe of conventional first-love-reunion stories, You Raise Me Up explored quite a unique route. Hopefully, the brave premise leads to relevant love and life messages.

I like how this series utilizes sharp lines and refuses to sugarcoat scenes. That being said, being drawn to Yong-sik’s journey to claim back his once glorious self is the reason I will continuously sign up for its next six episodes.

A sprightly romance is by all means welcome. But I want to go for the direct and implied lessons given the medical issues most likely to be covered target people in their 30’s and 40’s. The quick pace, interesting love narrative and committed character portrayals make this series such a smart addition to your watch list.
