Demon hunters disguised as noodle shop workers are going to move in the story of The Uncanny Counter.
Since I follow a slightly different K-Drama calendar, any series aired in late November and early December are usually counted for the following year. Thus, The Uncanny Counter which will be streaming this weekend is part of the first batch of 2021 K-Dramas for me.
Plot Sketch
Based on a popular webtoon of the same title, The Uncanny Counter is a satisfying tale of superheroes who, when not hunting down obstinate evil spirits, toil in a noodle shop.
The dynamic story depicts the struggle between the evil spirits who come down to Earth from the afterworld to become immortal and the Counters, each endowed with a special gift such as brute strength, psychometry and healing, who chase them down.
Main Characters
Suiting up as the uncanny So Mun, a Counter unlike any other in history, is Jo Byung Gyu. He is the youngest and central figure among the “counters”. So Mun is a hero-in-training who musters the courage to combat evil spirits after seeing a friend suffer injustice.
Seasoned and versatile actor Yu Jun Sang takes the role of Ga Mo Tak. He is a former police officer who lost his past memories because of an accident. A mentor to So Moon, he is a “counter” with unrivaled brawn. Yu Jun Sang is set to transform to a new role that will be loved by many.
Playing the interesting role of “demon detector” Do Ha Na is singer-actress Kim Sejeong. Aside from tracking demons with her ability, she can also read memories by touching the body of another person. She has an infallible record of evil spirit detection. Her character exudes chic and a detached vibe in abundance.
Praised for bringing her best to her roles, Yeom Hye Ran portrays Chu Mae Ok – the chef of the noodle restaurant. She has healing ability and is considered the heart of the “counters”. Her recent notable dramas include Hospital Playlist and When The Camellia Blooms.
Creative Team
Calling the shots of the production is director Yoo Sun-dong who last worked on Vampire Prosecutor 2. Adapting the webtoon 경이로운 소문 to drama screenplay is writer Yeo Ji Na.
The Uncanny Counter begins airing on November 28 via OCN. It will stream on Netflix on the same day.
