Becoming Anna – sought-after actress Bae Suzy courageously takes on the challenge of being a woman whose life is a lie.
Bae Suzy, known for her dramas While You Were Sleeping, Vagabond, and Start-Up, takes a new path as the lead actress in the Coupang Play series Anna.
Based on the original novel, Intimate Stranger, the new drama explores the psychological transformations of a lady who turns out to be an entirely different person. She has changed her past identity and has been living a life built up with lies.
Together with Bae Suzy are actors Jung Eun Chae, Kim Jun Han, and Park Ye Young who will also be appearing on-screen.
During the press conference, Suzy reveals her feelings as she takes up the heavy role in the thriller psychological drama.
It’s the first time I’m taking on a solo lead role, and it’s going to be heavy on my shoulders. In addition, the range of emotional changes of the characters is large, and the narrative is rather dark. I was faced with a difficult and heavy challenge.
Despite the weight, she must put up with, she wanted to do her best to portray the character.
“I wanted to see the psychological change in the process of going from Yumi to Anna. I paid the most attention to that part. Yumi, who was bright in school, and Yumi who was atrophied. I wanted to express it so that this other person can feel it.”
While learning about the characters’ profiles and backgrounds, Suzy deeply sympathized with Yumi and her transformation into becoming Anna.
The actress knew that internalizing these characters would be challenging for her. But nevertheless, she felt that she had to take the opportunity and grow as an actress.
“The script was really fun. When I read the script, I felt a subtle feeling. I felt pity for Yumi and strangely sympathized with her. It’s Yumi who doesn’t do anything well, but I really support her. I’m not lying. I watched it with the hope that she would be found out. The biggest thought was that I wanted to play this character. As an actress, I decided to appear as an attractive character worth trying at least once.”
Before wrapping up the drama presentation, when asked if she could succeed as a solo lead actress, Suzy determinately said,
“I think I’m going to show you a new image that is different from what I’ve shown you so far. I was excited, but I also felt a lot of pressure.” “Like Yumi’s line ‘I do everything I set my mind to’, I seem to have some kind of confidence. I have a strange confidence that I can do well.”
