Disney+’s “The Murky Stream” Unveils a Gritty New Korean Period Drama of Power, Betrayal, and Justice

What happens when those sworn to protect the people abandon their duty? When corruption festers at the heart of authority, bandits rise to claim power, and ordinary lives are caught in the crossfire. This is the pulse of The Murky Stream, a sweeping new Korean historical drama premiering September 26, exclusively on Disney+.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of 16th-century Joseon, the series delves deep into the shadows of the Gyeong River—now known as the Han River. Once a lifeline of commerce, it has now become a breeding ground for unchecked power, political betrayal, and ruthless exploitation. In this murky world, three figures—each scarred by fate yet driven by conviction—find themselves bound together in a desperate struggle to reclaim justice.

At the center is Siyul, played by Kim Rowoon (The Matchmakers, The King’s Affection). Once a noble youth destined for military honor, Siyul’s dreams were shattered by betrayal, forcing him into the life of a fugitive and, eventually, a hardened gang enforcer. His childhood friend, Jung Chun—brought to life by Park Seo Ham (20th Century Boy and Girl)—has chosen a different path, becoming the officer Siyul once aspired to be. Between them stands Choi Eun, portrayed by Shin Ye Eun (Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born, The Glory), a sharp-witted and ambitious merchant leader who must balance survival with her growing resistance to oppression.

Together, these three form an unlikely alliance, caught between loyalty and rebellion, survival and sacrifice. Their intertwined destinies set the stage for an epic battle against the powerful forces that prey on the weak, offering audiences a stirring tale of courage, brotherhood, and the relentless pursuit of justice.

Helmed by two of Korea’s most acclaimed drama creators—writer Chun Sungil (The Pirates, All of Us Are Dead) and director Choo Changmin (Masquerade, Land of Happiness)—The Murky Stream blends rich historical storytelling with pulse-pounding action and emotional depth. It is not only a story about the struggle for justice in a lawless world, but also a profound exploration of friendship, betrayal, and the fight to preserve one’s humanity when surrounded by corruption.

This latest addition expands Disney+’s slate of premium Korean Originals, joining the ranks of must-watch titles such as Nine Puzzles, the platform’s most-watched Korean drama of the year, as well as A Shop for Killers, Hyper Knife, and the critically acclaimed Moving. With its powerhouse cast, gripping narrative, and sweeping period setting, The Murky Stream is poised to capture the hearts of K-drama fans worldwide.

Don’t miss the premiere of The Murky Stream—a bold new chapter in Korean storytelling—on September 26, only on Disney+.
