Top Talents Compete in “Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born,” Set to Premiere on Disney+

Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born promises a captivating tale of ambition, rivalry, and the pursuit of dreams.

Disney+ is set to debut Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born on October 12, a highly anticipated Korean series that brings to life the inspiring story of a young girl’s quest to dominate the female classical opera scene in post-war Korea. The series, rooted in the popular webtoon of the same name, features Kim Taeri (known for Revenant and Twenty Five Twenty One) in the titular role of Jeongnyeon, a determined trainee at the Maeran Gukgeuk-dan (Theater Company). Jeongnyeon dreams of rising to the pinnacle of Korean female classical opera, despite the immense challenges and fierce competition she faces, particularly from her biggest rival, Youngseo, played by Shin Yeeun (from The Glory and Revenge of Others).

Set against the backdrop of Korea emerging from the devastation of war, the series explores themes of ambition, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. Jeongnyeon, with nothing but her extraordinary voice and unwavering determination, seeks to defy the odds and claim her place at the top. The narrative delves into her intense rivalry with Youngseo, highlighting their growth, struggles, and the sacrifices they make in their journey to stardom.

Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born is brought to life by the talented team of writer Choi Hyobi (who worked on A Time Called You and Babysitter) and director Jung Jiin (known for The Red Sleeve and Radiant Office). The series is produced by Studio Dragon, the renowned production powerhouse under CJ ENM, which has a reputation for delivering compelling and high-quality Korean dramas.

This new series is a key part of Disney+’s expanding APAC (Asia-Pacific) content slate, which continues to gain momentum with audiences worldwide. In 2024 alone, Disney+ has released over 10 premium Korean titles, building on the success of its 2023 offerings, including hits like Moving, Big Bet, and The Worst of Evil. Among the standout releases of 2024 is A Shop For Killers, which currently holds the title of the most-viewed local original series on Disney+ in the APAC region.

As Disney+ continues to broaden its selection of Korean originals, fans can look forward to a rich lineup of upcoming releases. Later this year, highly anticipated series such as The Tyrant, Unmasked, Seoul Busters, Gangnam B-Side, and Light Shop are set to captivate audiences, with more premium, talent-driven dramas like Tempest, Low Life, and Nine Puzzles scheduled for 2025.

Mark your calendars for October 12, and don’t miss the premiere of Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born on Disney+, where viewers will be transported to an era filled with desire, ambition, and the timeless pursuit of dreams.
