PRESS CONFERENCE: “Trolley” Highlights The Uncertainty Faced When You Have To Make A Choice

Trolley

SBS new Monday-Tuesday drama, Trolley held an online drama presentation. Attended by the creative team and lead actors, the series is scheduled to premiere on December 19.

Starring Kim Hyun Joo and Park Hee Soon, Trolley is a mystery dilemma melodrama that depicts the story of a member of the National Assembly member’s wife who lives with a hidden past. But her secret gets revealed to the world.

It boasts the creative team of Kim Moon-gyo who worked in Stove League, Hymn of Death and Lovers of the Red Sky and writer Ryu Bo-ri of Do You Like Brahms fame.

In Trolley, Kim Hyun Joo portrays Kim Hye-joo, a book repairer who fixes broken books and the wife of Nam Joong-do, a member of the National Assembly.

There is no doubt about her feelings for her husband, but he, who wanted her to live a normal life, never appears outside as a politician’s wife.

However, she suddenly confronts a crisis in her life as her long-held secret emerges through an unexpected incident.

Meanwhile, Park Hee Soon plays Nam Joong-do, a lawyer-turned-re-elected member of the National Assembly and Kim Hye-joo’s husband.

With his determination to make the world a better place, he has always worked hard to represent the socially underprivileged, but one day, Kim Hye-joo’s secret is revealed to the world, and he also challenges a sticky situation.

Rounding up the lead cast are Kim Mu Yeol and Jung Soo Bin. They will be closely intertwined in a dilemma that would also unfold the hidden meaning of the drama’s title.

A Story Confronting Complicated Choices

Incorporated in the series is the “trolley problem” – an experiment about thoughts in the field of ethics. It is a dilemma about whether a righteous choice can be made ethically about the sacrifice of the many for the sake of the few, or the sacrifice of the few for the sake of the many.

Acknowledging the interesting script, PD Kim confessed to reading it in one sitting. He wanted to do it for its delicate and tightly-written story that explores the human psyche. PD Kim also shares a lot of situations in the drama where the trolley dilemma is present.

“It’s not an exciting and enjoyable story. I think there should be a story that can be comforting and let people know that there are people who are in pain like this.”

He also gives an overview of what to expect in the series.

“This is the story of people at the crossroads of a choice. As a major incident occurs in the daily life of a married couple, the secrets they have been hiding in the aftermath of the incident surface, and as many people become entangled. It is a story of facing a moment of choice that cannot be made.”

Cast Synergy

Reliable actress Kim Hyun Joo relays trying not to be hindered by such a modifier in choosing work. She shares how Trolley felt like reading a mysterious novel, and she read it smoothly with no gaps.

Disclosing his preparations for his political role, Park Hee Soon sheds light on how he grasped the difficult work of lawmakers.

“The pursuit of our work was not to have a political color. It was to keep our own identity, neither left nor right. Since there were many unfamiliar words in the script, I spent a lot of time studying. I tried to memorize like a student.”

In terms of chemistry for the lead pairing, they both affirm how they easily connect by having the same MBTI personality.

“This is my first time working with Park Hee-soon, and I felt like I had known her for a long time.” – Kim Hyun Joo

“It can be unfamiliar and burdensome from the beginning, but we had a lot of conversations without it, and we filmed while being considerate of each other.” – Park Hee Soon

Aptly calling SBS his alma mater, Kim Mu Yeol only appeared in dramas aired on SBS thus far. He divulged what sets Trolley apart from his previous works.

“Previously, I learned a lot about the mechanism of TV dramas while appearing in Iljimae and the daily drama Wife Returns. When I received the proposal, I received a letter full of sincerity from the director and writer. This letter played a big role in moving my heart.”

Rounding up the lead cast Jung Soo Bin who plays the role of Kim Soo-bin expressed happiness about joining the series.

“I was the last to join the project, but I happily participated with the mindset of working with a great filming set. I was happy to be with good seniors and the best staff. I wanted to convey my role well, and I hope that my sincerity will make many people cry.”

Trolley premieres on SBS on December 19. International fans can watch it on Netflix.
