Brain Works Episode 4 Highlights
“I could only escape through death”
While fighting for their lives inside the freezer, Myung-Se asks Ha-Ru to take care of his daughter, Yi-Na, if something terrible happens to him. Fortunately, the anonymous person turned off the air conditioning, allowing them to survive. Shortly after, Jong-Koo shows up very confused about why they’re inside.
After getting out, Ha-Ru questions Jong-Koo about his whereabouts, and he tells them that he’s out drinking in a bar. Ha-Ru is still suspicious, so they look at the CCTV in his house. According to the footage, his sister-in-law came into the house after Ha-Ru and Myung-Se arrived. She’s also responsible for locking the two in the freezer.
Later that night, Myung-Se begins looking for Thoung’s sister, but she’s nowhere to be found. He eventually discovers that Thoung is after her passport and needs it to run away to Vietnam. Since her sister didn’t register her death, she can still board the plane.
It turns out that Thoung dressed like her sister and went back to her husband’s house. She decided to leave the country with her child before she gets banned from traveling. However, Myung-Se and Ha-Ru caught her before she was able to board the plane.
“People only see what they want to see and they believe what they see is everything.”
During Thoung’s interrogation, she admits she burned Hoai’s body but denies killing her. According to her, when she got home, Hoai was already dead in the closet. After seeing her dead friend, she had an idea to fake her death and live as Hoai to escape her husband. She claims he beats her a lot and threatens to kill her if she runs away.
When asked who killed Hoai, she pointed out Loc. According to her, they often fought about other women, and on the night Hoai died, they went on a date. Only Loc and Jong-Koo remain prime suspects at this point.
To find the killer, Ha-Ru used a lie-detector test to know which one of them lies. According to the results, Jong-Koo mistook Hoai as his wife because she wore the earrings, he bought for her. When he saw Hoai and Loc together, he thought that she was cheating on him and killed her.
With the case officially closed, Myung-Se can’t help but wonder about Ha-Ru. While in the freezer, Ha-Ru shared that when he was six, he got stuck in the car, and the sound of repeated banging triggers him. They managed to get him out, but he can’t remember the accident. He also revealed that his parents died in the same accident.
“Knowing the truth won’t change anything but you still need to make an effort.”
Captain Seol finally regained consciousness. However, she seems to have a different personality and has become more composed and confident.
Meanwhile, Ha-Ru’s aunt Ji-Hyeong is confused about why Haru received a letter from Dong-woo. She informs the Brain Hub’s director, Park Chi-Guk, and he immediately looks uneasy upon hearing Dong-Woo’s name.
He mentions that it’s a good thing Ha-Ru didn’t read the letter because Dong-Woo is a vile man, and those who have been in contact with him either became suicidal or murderers. However, he found a way to reach out to Ha-Ru directly.
The next day, Captain Seol comes to work wearing fashionable clothes that garnered attention from her co-workers. Myung-Se is clearly confused about her transformation. The accident ultimately became a blessing in disguise because she had a change in personality after the brain trauma.
Following that, Chi-Guk visits Dong-Woo in prison. The former doctor said he offered to help Ha-Ru with his psychopathic brain-rebuilding project. It turns out that they made a promise Dong-Woo would never contact Ha-Ru. Later on, Dong-Woo asks the director if Ha-Ru is still clueless about his parents’ death while smiling wickedly.
Brain Works Episode 4 Musings
This episode takes you on a wild rollercoaster as you try to determine who committed the murder. It had both amusing and touching moments, especially from Thoung’s perspective, who just wanted to raise her kid away from her abusive husband.
Additionally, Myung-Se and Yi-Na also displayed more of their endearing father-daughter bond. It’s also hilarious that Yi-Na believes her father has a crush on Ha-Ru based on how he talks about him. She even gossiped about it with her mother.
Moreover, Captain Seol’s transformation into a tough person that can stand up for herself is refreshing to watch. Woo Hyun and Chae Tae Hyun’s facial expressions definitely carry the whole show.
This episode did an excellent job of building up anticipation about the identity of those responsible for the deaths of Ha-Ru’s parents for the upcoming episodes to come.
