On the cusp of finally emancipating himself from the curse, Kokdu together with Oksin and Gaksin prepares to win Gye-jeol’s heart in the 5th episode of Kokdu: Season of Deity.
But it is no easy task since Gye-jeol deems Kokdu assuming Jin-woo’s body is the result of medical illness when he fell from the building. Her nemesis Jung-won also hinders her growing connection claiming she’s in a relationship with Jin-woo. Aside from that, her old flame also enters the scene.

Realizing he was right that Gye-jeol is Seol-hee’s reincarnation after they shared a kiss, Kokdu also saw the past when he promised to protect her but she failed to look for him in all the years he was looking for her.
“If you can control whether to be involved with someone or not, then that’s not fate.”
Princess-carrying Gye-jeol reminded her of how he was also the one who helped her not to fall down the stairs. Kokdu also complains that she denied recognizing the ring. Learning about the attack that Gye-jeol had and how it was because of his minions Oksin and Gaksin; he told them that Gye-jeol is Seol-hee.
Now they move to the mission of making her fall in love with him so she can break the curse when she tells Kokdu she loves him. With that, they plan a perfect proposal dinner.
Adorably, Kokdu is showing symptoms of attraction to Gye-jeol that would possibly lead to really falling in love. Whining about how everything she does looks pretty for him, Kokdu convinced himself that what was happening is due to the remnants of Seol-hee’s emotions within him.
“Everything has its right time Han Gye-jeol. The reason why people become unhappy is because they put off the right time to anytime.”
After a house call, Gye-jeol returns to the clinic and was pressed by Kokdu to have dinner with him. She refuses so he insists along with flowery words that they need to have dinner or might miss the right timing of what he wants to say and what he wants to hear from her. Agreeing to his pitch, they agree to meet after work.
Kokdu takes care of her date worries as well from the dress she has to wear and taxi to go to the place. He even lights up the broken street lamp while following her to the place they will have a date.
Unknown to them, Jung-won (Kim Dasom) already got a whiff of where they are. Just as Kokdu was tipped that Gye-jeol was arriving; Jung-won surprisingly appears and even embraced him.
Witnessed by Gye-jeol, the two privately chat as she reveals Kokdu’s amnesia and fugue syndrome.
Marking her territory, Jung-won tells Gye-jeol not to contact Kokdu anymore. But Gye-jeol makes a firm stance of waiting for Kokdu to regain his memories before she decides what to do with her feelings.
“When you tell someone to wait, there’s always a hidden curse. You, as the one who said it, forget how to go to the other person. And the one who is told to wait forgets how to leave.”
The next day, Kokdu finds Gye-jeol at her clinic and opens up going on another date. In response, she tells him that she’s scheduling him for an MRI.
As promised with Jung-won, she also tells Kokdu that they will not cross the line until he regains his memories to ensure that he’s not really in a relationship.
However, when Yi-deun asked her a favor to tend to his brother who suddenly fell ill after the surgery, Gye-jeol’s old wound resurface leading her to claim that she has a capable boyfriend.
When the townspeople she recently interacted with visit the clinic to confirm what Yi-deun said, Gye-jeol continues the white lie just so she can regain the self-esteem she lost because of Yi-deun.
Unfortunately, Kokdu denies the “best boyfriend qualifications” Gye-jeol announced. Sulking and wallowing in alcohol, Gye-jeol hates Kokdu for humiliating her. She wishes for him to disappear, and her wish came true as he faints and finds himself in the underworld.
Kokdu: Season of Deity Episode 5 Musings
This episode’s cliffhanger threw us off-guard and we can’t help but jump onto the next episode of Kokdu: Season of Deity. Introducing the conflicts to arise in the romantic scenarios was smartly done. As the series maneuvers at a nice pace, the unfolding of the problems to be tackled is so far in harmony.
In addition, the layers of fantasy elements make the narrative unpredictable matching the volatility of the characters. We know that once the true romance is realized by Kokdu, he would be in a dilemma.
It would be interesting if Gye-jeol’s power extends to bringing Jin-woo’s memories to Jin-woo. Another curious scenario is Yi-deun waging sincere intention to win her heart.
