Kokdu: Season of Deity Opening Week Highlights

“Loving you was my whole life.”

Kokdu, a deity of the underworld is cursed with immortality. He can only be emancipated if he finds the incarnated soul of the woman he vowed to protect and gets a love confession from her.

He visits the mortal world for 99 days every 99 years and is served by deities Oksin and Gaksin.

Meanwhile, at present time, Han Gye-jeol works as a visiting doctor struggling to keep a job. After being dismissed at a provincial hospital, she tries her luck at various hospitals.

Fortunately, she secured a spot at Pilseung Bio, a top-tier hospital in the country. Recognizing one of the interviewers as the man who helped her one time when she was about to fall down the stairs, she thinks her lucky stars are finally cooperating.

However, she later returns that she got the job because Do Jin-woo, the capable doctor who let her in, needs her help to stand as a witness to a medical malpractice involving his birth mother.

At first, she declines and gets furious about the dishonesty. But learning his reason, Gye-jeol relents.

Unknown to them, Chairman Kang of Pilseung Bio learned about Jin-woo’s poking of the medical malpractice. He orders his paid hound to take care of his adopted son by pushing him from a tall building to face his demise.

“Let go, and have your will follow your fate.”

Instead of dying, Kokdu, who is set to do his 99 days of punishing evil humans takes Jin-woo’s body. At that same moment, Gye-jeol whose job is in a precarious situation tries to look for him to help with her disciplinary hearing.

Kokdu, who is assisted by his faithful allies Oksin and Gaksin, is also pestered by hearing about Do Jin-woo as Gye-jeol’s brother suggests using social media to bring him out of hiding.

Unable to stand the clamor for Do Jin-woo, Kokdu was informed that it was exactly the new body he was hosting by Oksin. Thus, he sets forth to look for Gye-jeol who caused the relentless calls of humans urging him to perform his duties.

Baffled that Jin-woo does not recognize her, Gye-jeol assumes he might have suffered temporary memory loss. Pleading him to help her out of the predicament, he acquiesces. But on the hearing day, he did not make the side of the bargain.

Declaring he’s not going back to being a doctor because of his amnesia, he leaves the hearing.

Furious Gye-jeol follows and chides him, but Kokdu remained indifferent. Demanding him to apologize on his knees, Kokdu realized that Gye-jeol can make him follow her demands. His obeyance to her plea already happened before which stroke the idea that he could be the woman he was waiting for.

Kokdu: Season of Deity Opening Week Musings

Modestly casting an entrancing drama spell, the charm of Kokdu: Season of Deity appears to escalate further as seen in the next episode preview. Truly reminiscent of fantasy-romance favorites layering Korean folklore in its narrative, the series utilizes a kind of unique ironic master-servant situation for the lead pair.

Mortal Gye-jeol appears to have the ability to make the almighty deity, Kokdu follow her requests at will. Interestingly, his yearning to be liberated from the curse seems to be coming to a close as his uncanny connection to the doctor he met on his latest reincarnation appears to be the one he’s waiting for.

Obviously, Kokdu’s goal can only be realized if he can make her fall in love with him. That’s exactly the direction that the audience can expect.

We just don’t know how the apathetic deity can work on it. Looking at how Gye-jeol seems to be the hopeless romantic type, we can foresee quite adorable or hilarious moments between them.

Gladly, we’d want to see Kokdu really fall in love to spice up the romance building in the story, especially since Gye-jeol deserves genuine love, accordingly.

Can Kokdu break his curse by making Gye-jeol fall for her in Kokdu: Season of Deity? International fans can watch it on Viu!
