Love Is For Suckers Episodes 3 and 4 Highlights
Friends for a long time, Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon have been each other’s constant in highs and downs of their respective lives. They share the same house occupying the top and bottom spaces. Jae-hoon, in particular, protects Yeo-reum and has always been there for her in her worst moments.
In the opening week, Yeo-reum prepares to confront problems as her show gets axed. That is after overcoming the annoying fling experience with the chef host of her show.
On her birthday, her ex-groom also appears at her doorstep announcing his return. Capping off her birthday with Jae-hoon, they work to set up the mosquito net she ordered online. Trying to compete with who can kill it, Jae-hoon ends up on top of Yeo-reum.
Both pretending nothing happened, Jae-hoon mumbles a silent prayer to dispel the sudden steamy urge he felt. Yeo-reum also cooly says goodbye to him.
“He wasted all your time, only to back off at the prime age for marriage. Why are you seeing him again?”
The next day, a commotion at work made the network director appoint Yeo-reum to join the second season of the top-rating Kingdom of Love. The show is helmed by Kang Chae-ri whose manners are not at all worth loving. Because of her fight with one of the members of the show, the director needs Yeo-reum to keep Chae-ri in check.
Celebrating a new work, she cuts a deal with the network director that she will bring her staff to Kingdom of Love season 2. Just as she is taking a rest after a day’s work, her mom called to inform her that his father will be taken to the hospital. Unable to reach Jae-hoon who has a client at that time, she rushes to go alone but finds In-woo in front of the gate.
He offers to drive her to Chuncheon. Fortunately, his father regains consciousness. She heads back to Seoul with In-woo. Inside the car, he confessed about going back to the rest stop but did not find her there anymore. He belatedly apologizes for leaving her that day.
Inviting In-woo to her home, Jae-hoon witnessed it and is unable to sleep. His impeccable timing again stops an almost kiss from happening to ex-lovers, but his parade of unnecessary noise also distracts them.
At work, the audition for contestants of Kingdom of Love season 2 proceeds. Expectedly, different opinions arise between the Yeo-reum and Chae-ri. Luckily, they are still able to compromise.
On his rest day, Jae-hoon, unfortunately, burned his back while suntanning outside so Yeo-reum has to help him put potatoes to alleviate the pain. He also tells him that he already spoke with his father’s doctor and gives her money for the hospital bill.
“I came back to ask you to marry me.”
Feeding Hye-jin about the recent events in her life, Yeo-reum tells her bestie about the passionate hug In-woo gave him the last time. Right away, Hye-jin coaches her husband Dae-sik to check on Jae-hoon’s reaction to Yeo-reum’s reconciliation with her ex-boyfriend. But Dae-sik insists that Jae-hoon does not care at all.
Yeo-reum receives a call from In-woo for dinner. Without further ado, In-woo presents a wedding ring and tells her that he came back to marry her.
The scene cuts to Yeo-reum reaching her house as Jae-hoon also arrives from playing computer games. He asks if she’s dating In-woo again and she responds by asking his opinion if she should marry In-woo.
As expected, Jae-hoon can’t understand the situation and thinks of it as a joke until Yeo-reum lets him see the ring given to her.
“You two missed the timing. You both never got the chance to see each other in a serious manner. I think now is the perfect time to seize that timing. “
Contemplating In-woo’s offer, Yeo-reum proceeds with her daily life since the new show is premiering soon. In-woo continues to woo her, even sending gifts at work.
Meanwhile, Hye-jin visits Jae-hoon at work to push him to pursue Yeo-reum since she knows they are meant to be together, but the timing did not work for them in recent years. He honestly confessed that he sees Yeo-reum as a woman, but his current situation hinders him from taking a shot with Yeo-reum.
After Hye-jin left, Jae-hoon ponders on their earlier conversation specifically when she asked him if he is okay to see Yeo-reum being married to another man. He also looks back on the time when Yeo-reum asked him if he ever thought of being married and having a family to which he responded he is content with his life.
Later, In-woo also speaks with Jae-hoon about his feelings for Yeo-reum. The latter declines to respond as he claims In-woo does not have the right to ask. In-woo then urges him to be man enough and proceed with either pursuing Yeo-reum and not confusing her with friendship.
At the exhibit of Ji-yeon’s father’s artworks, Jae-hoon makes up his mind to tell her that he’s not interested to move further with their ambiguous relationship.
He also calls Yeo-reum to tell him if she’s getting off from work. But In-woo also calls for dinner at his place.
“I want love to be at least easy. Making ends work is already difficult. At least for love, I want it to be easy.”
She gets surprised when Jae-hoon swoops in with an umbrella to protect her from the rain. Then, In-woo arrives with a teddy bear, so she tells Jae-hoon that she will call him after.
Yeo-reum requests In-woo to just dine out somewhere and not in his place to make sure that her decision whether to marry him or not won’t be affected.
Back in their neighborhood, Jae-hoon sees the claw machine that Yeo-reum struggled to get one last time and when he refused to get it from her. Just as he was about to get one, his hand feels a sudden tremor so he foregoes his intention.
After dinner, In-woo brings Yeo-reum back to her home and confessed to meeting Jae-hoon. He tells her that he does not believe men and women can be “just friends”.
Deciding to check Jae-hoon and what he has to say, Yeo-reum gets hurtful words from him about being happy to get a proposal from an ex who left him.
He calls her “easy” to which she blurts back being fine with it because life is already hard for her so she at least wants to have love to be easy.
“I apologize this wedding is called off.”
Meeting her friends, Hye-jin, Hyun-soo and Dae-sik congratulate Yeo-reum. Unable to reach Jae-hoon who is alone at a bar wallowing in alcohol, Hye-jin and Yeo-reum go for a heart-to-heart talk. Hye-jin also confessed to urging Jae-hoon to chase her. Yeo-reum also admits that she was swayed at one point to imagine a future with Jae-hoon.
Seeing the prenup photos of Yeo-reum, Jae-hoon runs to where he is as flashes of his real emotions of the love for Yeo-reum appear. Like how he meant to say he came to the port because he missed her; the same way that he wanted to tell her not to marry In-woo when he appeared at his doorstep; and how he yearned to kiss her under the mosquito net they set up on her bed.
Reaching the place where his friends are, Jae-hoon saw In-woo inside so he backs out. On Yeo-reum’s wedding day, instead of a beaming bride, the guests see her standing on the pulpit with tears welling in her eyes. She apologizes and tells everyone that the wedding is canceled.
Love Is For Suckers Episodes 3 and 4 Musings
Perfectly crafted for singles in their 30s or 40s; Love is for Suckers continues to impress with eloquent and profound messages about singlehood. Week 2 is slowly shaping the romance that is probably been there all along between Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon.
Truth be told, people who might have given up trying romantic relationships can get a healthy dose of inspiration from this series.
We know of long-time friends who really cannot cross the line because there’s no emotion involved. Truth is, there really is, but acknowledging it is the hardest part. Now that the “best friends” already confessed to Hye-jin, we hope we won’t wait any longer to see them confess to each other.
In episode 4, we saw faint details of why Jae-hoon gave up on being a neurosurgeon. Through the course of Kingdom of Love S2 filming, it might be brought out given how feisty the tone of the series is.
Through Jae-hoon’s situation, we can relate to how he easily declines to proceed with an ambiguous relationship. But he can’t make himself confront real feelings. The deal breaker there is how he can’t hurt Yeo-reum because she matters a lot to him.
Notably, Lee Joo Yeon is doing a great job of making the love line of her character worth empathizing. Somehow, she is another face of a woman who wants to experience love. To the extent of being vocal and suggesting hints, at least she knows what she wants and does not sugarcoat things.
Why was the wedding called off? Will Jae-hoon seize this opportunity to finally chase Yeo-reum?
