Lovely Runner Episodes 13 and 14 Highlights

“Seon-jae, just wait a little. It will be over soon.”

With everyone making the same “wrong” choices, it was highly unlikely to get a different ending. Despite knowing how the accident would play out, Sol still walked down the same path, using herself as bait to catch Psycho Killer and put an end to this once and for all. But if Psycho Killer could be caught this easily, we wouldn’t have needed the time travel to begin with.

Likewise, having figured out Sol’s lie, Seon-jae rushed back to save her. And while calling the police and asking for help was the right thing to do, chasing after Psycho Killer on his own and making it clear he knew the killer’s identity was a risky move.

Good intentions aside, Sol and Seon-jae’s efforts to protect each other brought on another tragic fate. Psycho Killer might have gotten caught, but it was too late. The poor guy was stabbed and lost his life once again before Sol’s eyes.

“For changing many things, I had to lose a precious thing.”

With the third trial coming to an end, Sol is transported back to the future. From Sol becoming a movie director, to Hyun-joo and Geum getting married and having two kids, to In-hyuk being a star. Things pretty much unfold the same. But this came at a heavy price, losing Seon-jae.

A little mishap ensuing while dealing with a troublemaking actor lands Sol in a police station, where she reunites with Tae-sung, who is still as charming as ever. I don’t know how things went for Tae-sung this time around. But he is now a police officer, though he prefers it more in the holding cell than the night duty room. Some things simply don’t change.

“Perhaps, we should not have met in the first place.”

I knew the drama wouldn’t sacrifice Seon-jae. Yet a twist of Sol getting another 3 trials and going back to the day they met for the first time was something I didn’t see coming. Instead of holding her umbrella over him as she did in the past, Sol hides from Seon-jae so that they won’t meet each other or fall in love. (Banging my head against the wall.) To ensure they wouldn’t run into each other again even by coincidence, Sol moved out of her old house.

So, you are telling me Seon-jae is alive in the present-day timeline, but has no memories of Sol, and she is the only one who remembers everything! No wonder Tae-sung didn’t recognize Sol at first and only thought she was familiar. The girl erased her existence from everyone’s lives.

“Am I crying?”

Thanks to Hyun-joo (who is now working at the same company as Sol) sending the wrong script to Seon-jae, the movie Sol wrote based on their story ends up falling into Seon-jae’s hands. The way Seon-jae sheds tears while reading the script, wholly oblivious to anything, is both heart-rending and heart-melting. Does his heart remember Sol, by any chance?

Sol might be ecstatic to have her proposal finally produced. But she would rather scrap it than have Seon-jae star in the movie as the male lead. Claiming that Seon-jae is a little far from the character she has in mind, Sol rejects Seon-jae harshly and even goes as far as to tell Seon-jae not to accept any future works with her name on them. You are crossing the line here, girl.

“I still have a fresh image and would be a great actor in a romantic movie.”

Be it investing in the movie, cutting down on his appearance fees, or focusing solely on the movie and holding his schedule. No matter how hard Seon-jae tries to change Sol’s mind, her answer remains the same. She won’t cast him in her movie no matter what.

Actually, it isn’t until Sol’s grandma goes missing and Seon-jae drives her home (Grandma went to Seon-jae’s father’s restaurant.) that we get a proper conversation between our leads. Yet rather than following her heart that misses Seon-jae and longs for him, Sol quits her job so that she won’t come across Seon-jae again. Wow. That is a new level of noble idiocy.

“At this moment, this crossed my mind. That our fate is going around in circles like this Ferris Wheel.”

In one of my favorite scenes in the drama and the best scene this week, Seon-jae tells Sol, the thing everyone hopes she will finally realize. Saving the man she loves doesn’t count as a happy ending, as the woman has lost love in the process. Not to mention how said man is stuck in a life without any memories of the woman he loved more than himself. Can anybody be happy after losing love?

At first, Seon-jae is stubborn about joining the movie because of Sol’s insistence on not casting him. But this is no longer the case. Seon-jae genuinely wants to star in the movie to find an explanation for those weird things that keep happening to him. Shedding tears while reading the scenario is one thing, but Seon-jae keeps having strange dreams that feel vivid as if he experienced those things before. Seon-jae’s heart remembers what his mind forgot.

Seeing how adamant Seon-jae is, Sol tells him he may die if he gets mixed up with her. But before we can get his answer, a little mishap causes Sol to spot the necklace Seon-jae wears, the same one he gifted Sol on her birthday. Is Sol still certain that she can steer clear of this inevitable fate?

Lovely Runner Episodes 13 and 14 Musings

Those episodes were tough to sit through. Normally, I don’t want the episodes to end and keep craving more. But this week, I couldn’t wait for the episodes to end. I tried my best to be understanding of Sol and not judge her actions.

Yet it is becoming too hard to empathize with her. Claim as she might that she is pushing Seon-jae away to protect him, Sol was really annoying and rude this time. And not even her so-called good intentions can excuse Sol’s actions.

Having witnessed firsthand how her “selfless” decisions caused a crueler fate, Sol should have learned her lesson. But alas. If one gets another miracle after messing up their last trial, they should at least use it wisely. Instead of we-shouldn’t-have-met approach, Sol should have been honest with Seon-jae this time and put their heads together to find a way to defeat this cruel fate.

I am sorry, but erasing herself from Seon-jae’s life was a selfish thing to do. Sol basically turned Seon-jae’s life upside down with her unilateral decision, even though she knew undoubtedly Seon-jae wouldn’t agree with this.

Also, it isn’t just their memories together that Sol erased. If I can get behind Seon-jae not writing the rain song and their tokens together now gone, how am I supposed to take Seon-jae and Tae-sung no longer being friends, when their bromance is one of the drama’s highlights? Also, what about the beach trip that no one remembers about now? It is as if the drama built up an outstanding sandcastle, and then deliberately knocked the whole thing down.

After having Seon-jae finally find out about the time travel and getting our leads together, the drama threw all that progress out of the window and made Psycho Killer win again. I am sorry, but I didn’t sign up for this thriller movie about two innocent people chased after by a psychopath who is obsessed with killing them. This arc is dragging out and serves no real purpose.

And if the drama wanted to emphasize that we got the same result as everyone made the same choices then it should have given us character growth this week and new choices instead of the same hiding and running away game that we have seen enough of and became boring, to say the least. Haters-to-Lovers trope might be intriguing but not if thrown as a last-minute twist in the penultimate week.

I can’t help but get reminded by Seon-jae’s words after the second trial about how his time stopped without Sol and only started flowing again after they reunited together. Didn’t Sol learn anything? Not only is she living a meaningless life missing Seon-jae and hurting because of their memories together, but she also made the poor guy lead a lonely life as well. What is life without our cherished memories, anyway?

Ironically, Psycho Killer is still roaming free, preparing for another crime. You see, girl, you tortured Seon-jae and yourself for nothing. With only one week left, I hope the drama ties everything up in a nice bow and makes up for the frustration we felt this week. The drama has always been a blast with its solid story, refreshing plotlines and impeccable acting. So, I hope it keeps it up till the end. Stick the landing, please, show.
