One Dollar Lawyer Episodes 4 and 5 Highlights
Fresh from the success of their recent case, the team celebrates with a downpour of alcohol. The result is a drunk spectacle of Ma-ri who ends up sleeping at the law office.
For her second case in Ji-hun’s law office, Mari agrees when a client named Su-yeon asked for help on a framed murder case involving her younger brother.
As murder is not a case that the law office usually handles, they held a votation to read the case file and Ji-hun strangely votes for it after learning he could know the defendant.
Ma-ri who is also curious gets her curiosity shattered when the case is a controversial case of a young artist named Kim Min-jae killing his own mother. He claims it was his father’s doing.
It turns out that Ji-hun really had an encounter with Min-jae when in one of those times they were behind rent, they got into a deal with the landlady to pay it with a mural wall. The talented artist helped him then and when he learned Ji-hun is a lawyer, he asked to be helped if he will need it in the future.
The Case of Kim Min Jae
No lawyer wants to take Min-jae’s case, thus he got curious why he asked for his help. Visiting him at the detention center, his answer to why he picked Ji-hun is just as simple as he does not want to flaunt his money.
Ji-hun believes Min-jae when he said that his father is the real culprit. However, something does not add up to the relationship among members of Min-jae’s rich family. Min-jae became Su-yeon’s brother when her mother remarried.
When they visit the crime scene to investigate, they realize a man is nearby. It turns out the man hiding in the darkness is Prosecutor Seo Min-hyuk who is also doing an investigation.
Smart Ma-ri was able to secure a lip-reading transcript of the conversation between Min-jae’s sister and the family’s former house helper. However, the critical information was not captured.
Following his instinct, Ji-hun solves the cryptic puzzles. It turns out that Min-jae’s father committed suicide and to still get money from his pricey artworks, his stepmother has had him paint on behalf of his father. His step-sister Su-yeon who truly cares for him accidentally killed her own mother.
To protect Su-yeon, he offered to take the blame along with a plan to pin the murder on his father, who of course is already dead.
One Dollar Lawyer Episodes 4 and 5 Musings
Lessons on how being selfless can also impact other people were quite a ruminative thought in the latest episodes of One Dollar Lawyer. We often hear how self-sacrificing people are on the pitiable side, but in the story presented in the series, we saw the feelings of people on the receiving end.
Sometimes, the pressure for them can be overwhelming because they feel like a burden to people protecting them. It further emphasizes how there should be a balance when it comes to helping or motivating our loved ones who need it.
While this case is interesting, I’m surprised that it took two episodes and a half. Nonetheless, the highlighted message of assessing how much help you can extend to your loved ones, hopefully, reminds the audience. We can be put in the same kind of ordeal. Sometimes too much of our care is also causing emotional turmoil on the receiving end.
Noticeably, we see this series is not too emotionally taxing so far. The investigation process in the featured law cases so far does not encourage animosity among the characters. Instead, we see more healthy competition on the horizon.
Ji-hun is an enigma the more the series goes on in terms of his thinking process and connections. It’s a universally acknowledged truth in K-Dramaland that you can never go wrong with Namgoong Min’s versatility. Breathing life to an oddball but reliable K-Drama hero has been one of his strongest suits.
