Poong, The Joseon Psychiatrist Episode 8 Highlights

“I think a plague is spreading. I already saw someone with blisters.”

The Gyesoo Family is challenged to save people as a plague struck Sorak Village and medical supplies are hoarded. Commander Im Soo-man takes this opportunity to get his hand on Gyesoo Clinic again.

He overheard Physician Gye and Se-poong’s conversation about the medical ingredients they need to buy to cure the unknown plague. Commander Im then bought all the ingredients in the shop and plans on selling them to Physician Gye far from their original price.

However, Physician Gye is determined to help his patients and finds another way to obtain the medicinal ingredients from Commander Im. He and the Gyesoo Clinic agreed on stealing the ingredients from the commander’s storage, which they successfully executed.

Despite stealing this from Commander Im, Physician Gye still left their payment in the storage room.

“If this is measles, scabs should be forming by now. But those purple blisters… No, it cannot be. This has to be a coincidence. All the dansacho was burned years ago.”

Furthermore, Se-poong and the rest got to produce medicine for the villagers. However, their ingredients are only enough for the patients to consume for one day, but they notice improvements in their blisters.

This relief to Physician Gye is only just a moment as he saw purple blisters forming on the patients. The symptoms that the patients are experiencing are also similar to the case he handled years ago.

Physician Gye’s anxiety starts to rise as he remembers that his master, who wrote Haedongboncho, taught him about a plant called dansacho that is used to treat lupus. However, patients who consume dansacho also experience purple blisters and extreme bleeding that can kill them.

He also witness how the Second State Councilor Jo Tae-hak burned all the dansacho together with Jeon Kyu-hyung’s books.

With Physician Gye, Commander Im, Royal Inspector Cho, and Jeon Kyu-hyung agreed measures, everyone who has the plague will be quarantined in the mountains. They receive negative reactions from the villagers that they will be left there and will be burned to death.

“A physician should not abandon his patients.”

On the other hand, Se-poong’s trauma returns as he notices similarities with the plagues from the King’s illness. He conquers his fears and volunteered on staying with his patients in the quarantine area.

Despite having low hopes that they will be cured, he knows that his patients will feel at ease knowing that a physician is taking care of them. Physician Gye followed him with the bad news that Lady Eun-woo also got the plague.

As she investigates Surit Village, she learned that the villagers added a pink flower to the food and honey that they sell in the market. Eun-woo showed Physician Gye the flower and he immediately recognizes it to be a dansacho

This news pushed Se-poong to find answers about the connection between the plague with the King’s illness. He knows that Physician Gye has ideas about it, and he persuaded him to tell him about the plague.

They both also revealed that they know a book called Haedongboncho and that Physician Gye knows a poisonous plant that can cure purple blisters.

“Why is this necessary? It is not because I disobeyed your order. Is there another reason as to why you must kill me?”

A flower named Samaecho gave Se-poong hope that he can save Eun-woo and the Sorak villagers. He used the map he found in Haedongboncho in hopes that he can find this cure.

He traveled far, crosses many lakes, and climbed many mountains to get to the location the map showed. Se-poong’s hard work paid off as he saw a whole field of Samaecho on top of the mountain.

Returning with good news and high hopes, Royal Inspector Sin-woo stopped and aims to kill him. Despite reasoning that Se-poong defies his command about not leaving the quarantine area, Se-poong knows that he has another reason.

As Sin-woo is about to puncture Se-poong with his sword, his body weakens. It appears that he is also infected with the plague, and Se-poong helped him get to the quarantine area.

He also stopped Commander Im from burning the camp with his news that he successfully obtained the cure. However, Samaecho is never been tested to cure the blister, but Se-poong willingly consumed dansacho.

Physician Gye is then forced to use the plant to Se-poong, which resulted in positive results. After treating the patients, Se-poong pleaded with Royal Inspector Cho to cover the truth about the plague when he reports it to the Second state councilor.
