Twenty Five Twenty One Episode 7 Key Moments

“Your skills don’t improve consistently but in steps.”

At present, Hee-do hands Min-chae a gift from her dad, and Min-chae sulks at the fact that her father does not know that she has already quit ballet. While painting, Hee-do asks her daughter why she quit ballet, and explains that progress does not go up consistently.

Hee-do then recalls the day that her father told her the same words. When she first learned to fence, Hee-do was called a prodigy after winning a gold medal.

She promises her sick father to win another one, but he passes away early. A flashback also of her coach telling her to quit after not improving is shown. However, Hee-do resists her coach’s provocations and pledges that she will never quit.

During the start of her match with Yu-rim in the Asian games, Hee-do gets zero points while Yu-rim scores three already with the majority of the crowd cheering for her. Remembering her motivations, Hee-do begins to score, nearing Yu-rim’s points.

“It wasn’t her sword that broke, but her confidence.”

With only one point left to win, Yu-rim’s sword gets broken. However, they continue the match after a short break, and Hee-do wins the match.

Hee-do rejoices as she wins the gold medal, but she sees Yu-rim contesting to the referee that she was faster. In their classroom, Ji-woong gets angered by a remark of one of their classmates who lost his bet.

Noticing how the results of the fencing match are becoming an issue to the public, the press takes advantage of the situation to raise their ratings.

Hee-do, Yu-rim, and their coach attend a press conference. Yu-rim and Hee-do’s actions and answers to the reporters cause an uproar in the public, making the issue worse.

“Running away isn’t the solution.”

Overwhelmed with the situation she is in, Hee-do runs away and leaves her team. She misplaces her phone in the pharmacy, and Yi-jin comes to deliver it to her. He reminds her not to run away, and Hee-do stands firm that she was faster than Yu-rim, even demonstrating it to Yi-jin.

Their coach is angered for disgracing Korean fencing through their actions, so Hee-do and Yu-rim are asked to leave the training center.

Riding the train back home, Hee-do opts not to sit in any of the seats of the train. In one of the train stops, she remembers her late father who went out to buy noodles at that stop.

Meanwhile, on their drive back home, Yu-rim’s father convinces her daughter to continue fencing for herself, not for their family.

“What should have been the happiest moment became a piercing wound.”

Yi-jin goes the extra mile to convince referee Smith to talk about the result of the fencing match. His move on waiting for him in the hotel does not work, so Yi-jin approaches him in the airport with a podaegi after his conversation in the restaurant one night.

Asking Yi-jin why he is persistent, he clarifies that it is unfair for the athletes stirred up in the controversy. In the news broadcast, referee Smith agrees to be interviewed, and clears up the issues. Yi-jin, through his exclusive interview, gets praised by his senior for doing the right thing.

Hearing that in the news, Hee-do cries in a restaurant, and the people sitting next to her recognize her. They offer her a drink, which she declines as she is still in high school, and the old men sincerely congratulate her for her win.

Staying at Seung-wan’s hideout for the night, Hee-do gets locked inside, and calls for help from Yi-jin. Seung-wan and Ji-woong join Yi-jin in unlocking the room, and Ji-woong realizes that Yi-jin is also his senior in his club.

Entering the room, they all hear someone confessing to Yi-jin from one of the tapes of his recorded broadcasts.

Twenty Five Twenty One Episode 7 Musings

Hee-do’s advice to her daughter on making progress could be applied in all other areas in life, not only in fencing or in ballet. Sometimes, one could feel like giving up on their career or dreams for not making progress.

However, if you’re like Hee-do who enjoys and loves what they’re doing, giving up is out of the picture. Words would not stop you even though everyone else including your own mom believes that you would not make it.

Seeing how the press reacted to the rising issue on the fencing match, which they first deemed as unknown, can portray how people take advantage of issues even at the expense of attacking someone who is not yet proven guilty.

Adding to that is Yu-rim’s refusal to accept that she lost, which only created a bigger issue. It’s really saddening for Hee-do who should have been enjoying her win after a long time of experiencing failure.

Reporters should relay facts, but they are just adding fuel to the fire. With Yi-jin who has been persistent, the issue finally becomes settled, and Hee-do hears sincere congratulations and unexpectedly comforting warm words from a stranger.
