Would You Marry Me Episodes 3 and 4 Highlights

“You should be extra careful when you are around others.”

Luckily, Woo-ju diffuses the situation, lying to Sang-hyeon that Me-ri had to go home and taking him away quickly. So, the nosy aunt goes on her way. Later, Woo-ju calls Me-ri, urging her to find another place to stay and not move into the townhouse. Heeding his advice, Me-ri stays at a motel. She plans to live there for three months and then sell the townhouse. But nothing in the drama goes as planned.

The next day, Me-ri heads to the bakery company for a presentation and gets roped into attending a team dinner with the marketing team, where our fake couple does their best not to raise suspicion. As usual, Me-ri drinks herself silly, and a worried Woo-ju takes her to the motel. Things happen, and Woo-ju mistakes the situation for the motel owner sexually harassing Me-ri and punches him. But the truth is, Me-ri dropped noodles on the floor and burned her leg. And the owner was treating her.

“Do you really not have a place to spend the night?”

Out of options after getting kicked out of the motel, Woo-ju drives Me-ri to the townhouse, urging her to make sure not to get caught by Sang-hyeon. To her credit, Me-ri does her best to lie low but ends up getting caught.

A highly observant Sang-hyeon notes that it seems Me-ri lives there alone, getting suspicious that our fake couple lives apart. So, Me-ri asks Woo-ju for some spare clothes. But there is another hurdle. The department store CEO will drop by to give them a housewarming gift. So, both of them need to be there to welcome him.

Cue: our fake couple taking a wedding photo shoot at a self-service studio, decorating the house with matching couple items, and making us swoon with their newlywed antics, matching T-shirts, and all. Claim as they might that they are doing it because Sang-hyeon is watching. We can see they are enjoying it.

“Why did I give him every piece of my heart?”

Getting ready for the CEO’s visit, Me-ri prepares some potential questions to review with Woo-ju. The conversation proceeds to how she met her ex-fiancé, and he hits a new low, having Me-ri pay for the apartment, honeymoon, and even his tuition and classes without as much as a thank-you. Me-ri loved him with all her heart, but he rewarded her with heartbreak. Woo-ju comforts Me-ri, assuring her she will meet a nice man who doesn’t take her love for granted. Who knows, she might have already met him?

The visit gets cancelled after the CEO causes some trouble, which Sang-hyeon is busy sorting out. (He is an abusive guy who assaults people around him, including Sang-hyeon. And he is faking being hospitalized to get away with his latest crime after the victim reported it to the police.) Thus, we get more bonding time between our fake couple as Me-ri shares with Woo-ju the design ideas she made for the bakery.

“The world isn’t as harsh as you might imagine. But sometimes, the least expected also happens.”

Visiting Seoul, Me-ri’s mother plans to drop off some side dishes at the ex-fiancé’s family house, unaware that the wedding is called off, and it goes as well as one can expect. Me-ri wants to head there and stop her mother. But she is stuck in an important meeting. So, Woo-ju offers to go instead. Giving Me-ri’s mother a ride to the terminal, they chat a bit about Me-ri, and the mother is elated to hear Woo-joo praise Me-ri.

Originally, Me-ri kept the divorce from her mother because she didn’t want her to get upset. But there was also an underlying feeling that she was worried her mother would blame her for the wedding cancellation and divorce. And it didn’t help matters that Me-ri’s mother took the insults from the ex-fiancé’s mother lying down and even pleaded with her to reconsider, promising to set Me-ri straight. However, when Me-ri calls, the mother lies about the ex-fiancé’s mother not being there, though Me-ri ends up learning the truth.

This mother-daughter duo genuinely cares about each other, but they need to be more honest. With some pep talk from Woo-ju, Me-ri works up the courage to tell her mother the truth. And Me-ri’s mother proves to be cooler than expected, encouraging Me-ri to move on and find a better guy. Also, when she hears about the townhouse, she urges Me-ri to stick it out and not get caught.

“Sometimes, the thing you are searching for is right under your nose.”

Rewinding to that night at the motel, we see Woo-ju stumble across Me-ri’s family photo, and the childhood connection is confirmed. Me-ri is the girl who comforted him on the day his parents passed away. She cried for him and gave him the stuffed doll her father had gifted her on her birthday. Figuring out their connection, Woo-ju becomes more invested in the fake couple act and starts suggesting things too.

For now, he claims it is out of gratitude. But we can see he is slowly catching feelings for Me-ri. It would be more interesting if the drama held off this reveal so Woo-ju would fall for adult Me-ri. But we will get behind that, as it made Woo-ju more cooperative, though he doesn’t plan to tell Me-ri anything. But surely, she will soon learn Woo-ju is the boy from that night, ak.a her first love. Given how much Woo-ju cherishes the stuffed doll, her feelings aren’t one-sided.

As we end this week, the ex-fiancé returns to Korea and calls Me-ri. His affair partner cheated on him, giving him a taste of his own medicine. So, he will probably put on an act and try to get back together with Me-ri. But our girl won’t let him mess with her again.

Would You Marry Me Episodes 3 and 4 Musings

The drama may be full of tropes, and the plot might be nothing groundbreaking, but it still works. The ex-fiancé’s return will stir up Woo-ju’s jealousy and raise the stakes about the townhouse. Of course, he will try to blackmail our leads, but we hope he won’t have his way.

In an intriguing twist, the drama seems to have some plans to pair up Sang-hyeon with Woo-ju’s doctor friend, Yun Jin-gyeong (Shin Seul-ki). With their families close, Woo-ju and Jin-gyeong have been friends since childhood. And Jin-gyeong seems to harbor a longtime crush on Woo-ju, though he considers her only a friend.

Earning Woo-ju’s grandmother’s approval, Jin-gyeong resolved to confess to Woo-ju, but their plans got canceled because he forgot about it. So, Jin-gyeong ends up drinking and runs into Sang-hyeon. They met before at the hospital, and she empathized with him for having to put up with his shitty boss.

We are on board Sang-hyeon and Jin-gyeong’s ship. They look good together, and though Sang-hyeon seems cold and aloof most of the time, he felt for Jin-gyeong when she mentioned getting stood up and tried to comfort her. Rather than turning nasty, we hope Jin-gyeong gets her own love story.

Also, with the unredeemable ex-fiancé, the story has enough tension. Not to mention Woo-ju’s shifty uncle-in-law, who is more dangerous than he looks, embezzling company funds and murdering an innocent employee to cover his tracks. He even has the nerve to shift the blame to the dead employee. With a nosy aunt, a cunning uncle-in-law, and a nasty cousin, Woo-ju is surrounded by enemies. Hopefully, he can find the family he never had with Me-ri and her mother.
