K-Drama Review: “Why Her” Preaches Justice That Still Prevails Despite a Flawed System

why her

Even at the hands of the powerful, Why Her assures that everyone is equal in the eyes of the law.

Money, power, and connections have a lot of influence in controlling the justice system. Greed has its end, and the small legal clinic team in the drama proves that a collective thirst for justice is enough to go up against three abusive powerful giants.

Why Her

Why Her Finale Highlights

“Anyone who commits a crime must face punishment.”

In her disciplinary hearing, Soo-jae presents the evidence handed by Yoon-sang to her. Through those, their claims against Chairman Choi become more fortified.

Ju-wan tries to argue the claims are groundless, but they continue to show a video of the chairman pushing Park So-young.

Moving on to find fault with Soo-jae during Kim Dong-gu’s case, Soo-jae then admits to the faults pinned on her, but also exposes the real happenings in the past.

Kang-ja backs up the claims that a confession was forced from Kim Dong-gu as she was still new in the police force at that time.

Revisiting the past, it has been revealed that Chairman Choi’s DNA was found on the knife as he was the one who really killed Na-jung, who they thought was already dead.

Testifying in court, Mr. Ha offers his sincerest apologies to Kim Dong-gu, who also sits to testify.

Meanwhile, SP partners, Yoon Se-pil also reveals his position on the case Soo-jae is exposing. He reveals how Kang Eun-seo was violated in the incident.

Concluding Soo-jae’s hearing, Soo-jae is commended for exposing the truth of both the past and recent incidents.

Hee-young and Young-bae also step down from their positions and thank Soo-jae.

“The law must be fair and just for everyone.”

Eating together after, Chan consoles Soo-jae that she can live a good life by taking it easy, reassuring her that it’s okay to fail.

Chairman Choi drinks alcohol while also overdosing on pills looking at the view from his office. He calls Soo-jae and tells her that she was the only one who answered, and refuses to admit that what he did was evil.

Soo-jae calls for emergency responders, but the chairman passes away. Attempting to regain their status, Chairman Han and Assemblyman Lee wash their hands to appeal to the public.

Director Baek is represented by Soo-jae in court, but he still asks for a fitting punishment for the crime he has done.

Six months later, Soo-jae is a law professor and an owner of a small law firm. Mr. Yoon offers to expand it, but she turns it down.

Genuinely happy with how she owns all the decisions she makes, Mr. Yoon supports Soo-jae’s choice.

In her class, Soo-jae takes on a similar approach to her past class, but this time, reminding her students to also look at the path they take to success.

Revealing that Kang-ja got the highest score in the past class, her monetary reward was secured, and she still willingly accepts the offer to intern at Soo-jae’s law firm.

Ready to walk in the rain without an umbrella, Chan brings Soo-jae an umbrella, and walks together.

Why Her Quick Plot Recap

Working at TK Law Firm, Oh Soo-jae (Seo Hyun Jin) becomes the top lawyer of the firm, and a candidate for the managing partner position. Looking forward to her inauguration, an incident happens with the case she has been handling, which cancels her promotion.

Instead of becoming the managing partner, she is assigned to be a professor at a law school. There, she meets a student named Gong Chan (Hwang In Youp), who recognizes her right away as the public defender who believed in him in the past.

Digging into the case that canceled her inauguration as managing partner, a series of events happen that lead to her and the legal clinic team uncovering the truth of several incidents.

Involved in those cases, Soo-jae and Chan confront their past, and together with the team, they reveal the truth.

Why Her Series Peak Points

Powerful Heroine who Finds Her Own Way

Beginning at the bottom, Oh Soo-jae has climbed her way to the top, and reached a position that everyone envies. Her character has a strong fighter attitude, which viewers may look up to.

Her competence at work puts people in awe. However, she still has admitted parts that she feels ashamed of.

Confronting her past, she finds a meaningful life outside the money that she earns in winning cases. In this, she becomes a great role model for a fighter for justice.

Downfall of an Empire

In a world full of injustice, there seems to be no hope of going up against big corporations that can easily influence various institutions in society.

Although fictional, characters like Chairman Han, Assemblyman Lee, and Chairman Choi represent a portion of the powerful in today’s society, who abuse the law for their personal gain.

But in the end, there is an end to their abuse of power that disgraces the justice system. The collapse of their empires is also caused by their own misdeeds, which have always been at risk to be exposed.

Comparing Success and a Meaningful Life

In the later episodes of the series, Soo-jae finds a better life than the one she had at TK Law Firm. Thanks to Chan who brings her by the ocean and the port, she finds a future that she looks forward to.

Exposing the crimes of Chairman Choi, TK Law Firm, falls from the top, and Soo-jae becomes a professor again with a small law firm.

When offered to be a bigger law firm, she rejects it, saying that she loves where she is at present. In that, she inspires her students to also look at the path they take in pursuing success, not measured monetarily, they would feel proud of.

Why Her Series Musings

There’s so much to admire in Soo-jae’s journey in the legal field battling against all odds. Honestly, I wasn’t really the best supporter of the romance aspect of the series, but it was passable.

Following the story of how they exposed the illegalities of the empires built by the three powerful men in the series was engaging.

why her

With the abundance of series that has similar plots of legal battle and exposing corporations, Why Her has offered a great reminder to those who wish to pursue a career in the legal field.

However, its lessons may also apply to all. At its core, the series shows how questionable values and motivations bring one’s self down.

Believing that they are paving their way to success with their sons through their misdeeds, the fathers of three were rather setting up their children and their empires for a downfall in the future.

Success with Accountability

In the end, what Soo-jae called a good life is a success that she can be proud of. This just reminds us of how success loses its meaning when you step on other people and violate their dignity.

Money or wins are not the only measures of success. The success that we own and are proud to show to the world is a true victory.
