Melancholia Quick Plot Recap (Spoilers Alert!)

Set in a private high school, Ji Yoon-Soo is a passionate math teacher who teaches mathematics with passion. She has her way of teaching that a teacher has never done before.

Meanwhile, Baek Seung-Yoo is a student that has very good mathematic skills. When he’s 10 years old, he got into MIT and suddenly dropped out of school. However, when he met Yoon-Soo he slowly realized that he loves math.

As they got along, they discovered that cheating and prejudices are happening inside the school. On the other hand, Sung Ye-Rin is the daughter of an assemblyman who is close to Principal Noh. Ye-Rin got key answers to their math exam and Yoon-Soo found that she cheated.

To hide the cheating case, Ye-Rin shared a photo of Yoon-Soo resting on the shoulders of Seung-Yoo during their trip on Jeju. Principal Noh plots them that they have a romantic relationship and released the photo publicly during Yoon-Soo’s wedding.

The wedding gets cancelled, and Yoon-Soo loses her job. Meanwhile, Seung-Yoo promises her that he would uncover the truth. Four years later, he succeeds as a mathematician and gained a prestigious award.

With his popularity and known reputation, Seung-Yoo decides to teach in Asung High School and starts his plan to take Principal Noh down. He also meets Yoon-Soo again and it seems that his feelings towards her don’t change.

Together, they slowly unveil the prejudices and biases happening at the school. Moreover, they want to clear their names of the false accusations. In the end, Yoon-Soo and Seung-Yoo triumphed about their plans.

Moreover, they continue their love and their love in mathematics. The drama ends with the two on a romantic note.

Melancholia Series Highlights (Spoilers Alert)

The Power of Aristocrats

More than the romance between Seung-Yoo and Yoon-Soo, the drama focused more on the injustices that happened inside Asung High School. Rich parents who were willing to pay the price got hidden privileges from the school.

These students got answer keys from a teacher and memorized all the answers that’s why they perfected all the items. The drama shows the power of aristocrats that has all the money they can burn to solve all their problems even though it’s unfair.

Principal Noh wanted the best for Asung High School but more than anything, she wanted to succeed in everything to please her father. In the end, all her secrets are revealed but her daughter Ji-Na remained beside her.

On the other hand, Ye-Rin also apologized to Yoon-Soo and Seung-Yoo. She realized that the things that they did were wrong. Melancholia also proved that people can change and be better.

Seung-Yoo’s Respect For Yoon-Soo

I know we all anticipate the romantic happenings between Seung-Yoo and Yoon-Soo. We all noticed how Seung-Yoo respected Yoon-Soo’s decision every time she says that she wants to move alone.

Moreover, when Seung-Yoo confessed to her, he didn’t push himself on Yoon-Soo but rather remained by her side all the time. It takes many years but his love for Yoon-Soo remains the same.

Waiting for the time to finally see them acknowledge their feelings, it’s an added bonus to witness the shocking plot twist in the end. The kiss during the last minutes of the final episode is definitely squeal-worthy because finally, they give themselves a chance to be happy after having a relatively melancholic love journey.

Melancholia Series Musings

Truth be told, this drama is a little slow-paced, however, it can’t be helped but still watch each episode eagerly because you feel the need to know how the lead pair would take down all these big people.

These individuals who have all the resources and money challenged the two to have the courage to unveil the truth. Just like mathematics, the two also badly wanted to prove that their conviction is the truth. Also, they wish to enlighten the people about these injustices.

We also expect Yoon-Soo and Seung-Yoo to be a couple but the drama focused more on presenting the message of the story that does not dwell on the romantic conjecture. Thankfully, it still gave a fan treat in the end, albeit faint.

Overall, the cast members deserve applause for their exceptional portrayals. especially Jin Kyung, who played Principal Noh. Her portrayal as the villain made the tension in the story flow.

Initially billed to explore taboo romance, the series made sound arguments on the age disparity of the lead pair based on the premise of how they came to know each other as wronged teacher and student. Their romantic growth was given fictional time to settle to being socially accepted.

Since the series tackles issues concerning the education system, the romance scenario gave a respectful approach. Achieving mutual romantic love, Melancholia asserts how society-deemed forbidden romance can be sustained by two people who share the same amount of love towards each other.
