 XX Quick Plot Recap

Working as a head bartender, Yoon Nana (Ahn Hee Yeon) has won an international competition for bartending. In hopes to scout a new head bartender for her second bar, Lee Ru Mi (Hwang Seung Eon) walks into the bar Nana is working at.

Meeting again after 5 years, it turns out the two used to be friends in their university days, but have fallen apart because of an incident.

Despite the unresolved past between them, Ru Mi comes to persuade Nana to join her bar, but she gets rejected. Nana works hard as she dreams to own the bar she is working for. However, Ru Mi buys the bar, and becomes the owner of it. Workers of the bar are retained, and with that, Nana and Ru Mi unavoidably face their painful past.

XX Series Peak Points

Strong Female Leads

Nana and Ru Mi may have had the lowest moment in their lives, but at present, they made sure to rise above those. Nana has a kind nature, and her experience of betrayal from her ex-boyfriend did not hinder her to become her best. Winning at an international competition tops her competence in her career. Moreover, her choice to face her past, and work with Ru Mi, just shows that she values professionalism.

On the other hand, Ru Mi is a female owner of two bars. Men in the industry look down on her, saying that it was all thanks to her father’s money that she was able to run a business. Ru Mi proves them wrong, and shows that she’s truly capable in her career.

Reconciliation of the Past

Even though Nana’s ex-boyfriend cheated on her with her friend, Ru Mi, she still chose to side with her friend. Nana is aware that her boyfriend seduced Ru Mi, but even with that their friendship still fell apart.

At present, they work together, and inevitably tackle their past. Nearing the end of the series, Ru Mi acknowledges all her wrongs, and Nana also comes to confront all those that have happened with them during that cheating incident.

In addition to that, Nana’s decision to inform and help Ru Mi when her boyfriend Gyu Min (Kim Joon Kyung) was cheating on her, just points out that Nana does not wish anything bad for her old friend.

Genuine Support and Loyalty

Jayden, Nana’s roommate and friend, adds entertainment value to the series. They are often mistaken as lovers, but they are purely just friends. Jayden is a friend that has stuck with Nana even in their university days. At present, the two are still close, and he makes sure that Nana gets the best in life.

Nana, also, in some way has shown her loyalty to her friend Ru Mi as she chose to believe her instead of Tae Hyeon, her ex-boyfriend. Moreover, Nana has also expressed her support for Ru Mi when she was going to confront Gyu Min for cheating on her.

XX Series Musings

Women who succeed in their careers are featured in this drama, and they are characters that viewers can look up to. Nana used to run away from the past, and blank out hearing a song that makes her remember the past. However, as she encounters Ru Mi, and also Tae Hyeon again, she chooses to bravely face what happened to them in the past.

Although Ru Mi may have made her own mistakes in the past, her character at the end humbly acknowledges her mistakes in the past. Her character is remarkable also as she stands up against the men who belittle her management skills.

Cheating and betrayal can make people feel their lowest moments in life. What’s commendable in this drama is that it highlights how the act should be pointed to the man also, not only to the third party involved. Men should not walk away from their wrongdoing, and be glorified for doing so.

Sunmi sang Gotta Go, one of the soundtracks of the drama, and it really suited the scenes as it radiates a powerful vibe. Playing that in the background accentuates the scenes of Ru Mi and Nana, who are strong independent women.

Overall, XX is a fascinating watch as it tackles the topic of betrayal and cheating in a way that calls out who the real perpetrator is. Moreover, it highlights how women are strong, and capable of achieving great things in life.
