Gyeongju – the representative capital city of Silla dynasty brims with UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among these historic sites is Cheomseongdae Observatory, designated as National Treasure No.31.
Featured in Netflix’s hit romance film, 20th Century Girl is Cheomseongdae Observatory where Na Bo-ra’s school went on a school trip.

Visit Korea states that the observatory was constructed during the reign of Queen Seondeok (r. 632-647). It is one of the landmarks of Gyeongju.
The observatory was built in a cylinder shape at approximately 9 meters in height. Additionally, it consists of 365 stones, symbolizing the number of days in a year.
TRIVIA: the rocks are piled in 27 layers symbolizing the 27th ruler, Queen Seondeok, and the days in a lunar month by adding the of two rock layers on top.
While in the vicinity of Cheomseongdae Observatory, you can go to nearby historic sites including Woljeonggyo Bridge, Gyeongju Wolseong Palace Site, and more.
Interestingly, Cheomseongdae along with other Gyeongju historic sites are also featured in Reply 1988 as part of the school retreat scene in the aforementioned drama.
