Indonesian Series “Cigarette Girl” Piques Interest With Woman-Empowering Message In Latest Teasers

Netflix has unveiled the latest trailer and key art for its Indonesian series Cigarette Girl which will start streaming on November 2, 2023.

Based on the novel by Ratih Kumala, the period drama follows the story of Dasiyah (Dian Sastrowardoyo), whose passion is concocting the perfect formulas for clove cigarettes, known as kretek.

It tells a strong woman empowerment message and an epic romance between Dasiyah and Soeraja (Ario Bayu), with the Indonesian kretek industry and 1960s historical events as the background.

Helmed by acclaimed directors Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah, the series is produced by BASE Entertainment with showrunners Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson. Ratih Kumala and Tanya Yuson are credited as screenwriters, along with Kanya K. Priyanti and Ambaridzki Ramadhantyo.

The trailer reveals a glimpse of what viewers can expect from the series. Lebas (Arya Saloka), son of Soeraja, encountered Arum (Putri Marino) on his quest to find Dasiyah, while Dasiyah who in the past dreams of creating the best kretek, is hindered by traditions.

Willing to help Dasiyah realize her dream, Soeraja finds himself in a row with Seno (Ibnu Jamil). The interconnected stories eventually lead to secrets buried for decades unraveled at last when Lebas meets Arum.

The series also features actors Tissa Biani, Sha Ine Febriyanti, Winky Wiryawan, Sheila Dara, Ibnu Jamil, Rukman Rosadi, Verdi Solaiman, Nungki Kusumastuti, Dimas Aditya, Pritt Timothy and Tutie Kirana.
