Queen Of Tears Episode 13 Highlights

“I would like you all to know that I regret the life I led. I hope you live differently”

Unluckily, the panic room turns out to be empty. By the time Hae-in’s family arrived, all the money was transferred somewhere else. It wasn’t Eun-seong (him staring at the elevator’s back door was a red herring) but the mistress who learned about the secret room location after stumbling across one of Grandpa’s old videos. She is even shameless enough to demand staying under the same roof as the Hongs, since she is a legal resident and can only be kicked out through a legal procedure.

I desperately wished Grandpa’s last words could give Hae-in a clue on how to defeat the evil duo. But it was all about the regrets Grandpa had about living his life wrongly and his wishes for his family to not follow in his footsteps. Getting a funeral is sad enough, but Hae-in’s words about it being a death rehearsal and how she will be left alone broke my heart as much as it did Hyun-woo. Can’t a miracle happen already and Hae-in gets cured?

“Are you saying that this surgery will save my life?”

Thankfully, our prayers are answered. Having reached out to practically every hospital out there, Hyun-woo gets a call from a German hospital, informing him that Hae-in can get surgery for her tumor. Wow! That is awesome news. But unfortunately, this miracle comes at a price. As a side effect, it is highly likely that Hae-in will lose her memories from before the surgery, including Hyun-woo, her family, and everything else.

With the clock ticking and Hae-in’s WBC not going up enough to receive clinical treatment, getting surgery is the only left option. Knowing how Hae-in is, she will definitely refuse to get the surgery if she hears about the side effects. So, Hyun-woo settles to keep it a secret from Hae-in.

Adding to Hyun-woo’s burden, Hae-in kept asking if the surgery would indeed save her life and cried tears of joy, feeling as if she woke up from a long nightmare. Normally, words about being reborn again after being sick sound delightful, but those very words tear Hyun-woo’s heart to pieces.

“You can’t take this back even if you wake up one day and dislike me.”

To celebrate the happy news, Hae-in tells Hyun-woo to take a day off so they can hang out together. It is their first trip in a long time after their honeymoon. So, Hae-in wants to make up for the time they missed and go on many trips after the surgery.

Throughout their marriage, Hae-in has kept three secrets from Hyun-woo. The first of which is being the owner of the mp3 player. Hyun-woo is shocked to hear that his first love and ideal type are none other than Hae-in. Those two were born to be together. Our BaekHong couple reminisces on that day. And the memory is clear in their heads as if it happened only yesterday.

Since they now have a future together, Hae-in surprises Hyun-woo by putting on the ring. Also, as he wishes, she will withdraw the divorce. But once again, this ecstatic news breaks Hyun-woo’s heart. In another situation, Hyun-woo might be on cloud nine. But he can’t help but fear what would happen to them once Hae-in wakes up from the surgery with no memory of him.

“We are bound to run into hardships again one day. Then we can pull out these happy memories as if they are candies in a candy jar and endure these moments.”

Though they can return to the Hongs family house, Hae-in and Hyun-woo resolve to move into Hyun-woo’s studio apartment. Being in spacious places only tore them apart and they only need each other to be happy. So, Hae-in is happy to announce the handsome bachelor on the 11th floor isn’t a single man anymore but a married man who got himself a gorgeous wife.

True to their feelings, Hae-in and Hyun-woo try to make the best of their time together and create as many precious memories as they can. There is no denying that misfortunes will come their way again, but they can call on those happy memories and endure the hard times.

“You will forget everyone, the places you’ve been, and all the experiences you’ve had.”

Grateful for this new chance at life, Hae-in wants to reciprocate and become a better person. From gifting the building she bought in Hyun-woo’s hometown to his parents, to making plans to renovate the department store and make it more comfortable for the clients instead of setting up many pop stores to allure them to spend as much money as possible.

Willing to become a better person and a better husband too, Hyun-woo surprises Hae-in by bringing snow in October since it was her wish to see the first snow. Hae-in also has a little surprise for him. The second secret Hae-in kept from Hyun-woo was him being her first love all along. She kept it from him in case Hyun-woo got arrogant, but it was also fun teasing him about it. (I almost cracked up at how long it took Hyun-woo to realize he was the guy from the bus Hae-in was talking about.)

Not wanting to fool Hae-in anymore, Hyun-woo asks Hae-in about the third secret (During their dating days, Hae-in lied to Hyun-woo about a raccoon residing on the company rooftop.) and comes clean to her about memory loss being a side effect of the surgery. Hearing that, Hae-in feels the earth beneath her shattering. Now, she has to decide between losing her memories to live or choosing not to get the surgery but die as a result. What a cruel fate.

Queen Of Tears Episode 13 Musings

I knew the miracle to save Hae-in’s life wouldn’t come with no strings attached. Yet losing all her memories is so harsh. Seriously! I would have understood if Hyun-woo kept it a secret all along. But his decision made me respect him more. Definitely, it won’t be easy to convince Hae-in, but I have faith in our BaekHong couple to get over this hurdle as well.

Balancing out the heaviness, I was touched by how Hae-in’s parents wanted to extend the duration of their stay at the Baeks’ even by just a little. It might have started because they had no other place to stay. But it was clear the two families grew closer over their time together.

It was also nice watching Soo-cheol get some character development and decide to become independent of his parents now. He might have a lot to learn, but he is set on doing his best to protect his wife and son. Soo-cheol’s happiness was almost cut short, though, when the mistress threatened Da-hye into running away again. But his sincerity won over once again and Da-hye returned to him.

On the other hand, it seems Aunt Beom-ja has already fallen in love with her potential future husband. She was thrilled to bits when Future Husband asked to meet at night, only to get disappointed after learning he only wanted to give her condolence money to thank her for helping him locate his elderly mother. Who knows? Maybe being apart will help Future Husband grow some romantic feelings for Aunt Beom-ja as well after sensing her absence.

Will Hae-in and Hyun-woo rediscover the genuine romance that initially bind them in Queen of Tears? Find out on weekends on tvN! International fans can watch it on Netflix!
