Crushology 101 Opening Week Story

“My heart pounds at handsome men, making me a softie for good looks.”

Growing up, our heroine, Ban Hee-jin (Roh Jeong-eui), was always drawn to handsome men. As a child, she was the type to judge the book by its cover, more so if it featured a good-looking man. As a high schooler, she had a crush on a student teacher and even tried to follow him to another province. Now, Ban Hee-jin is a second-year sculpture major, ranked top student and better known as Bunny among her peers. But for all her high standards in men, Bunny didn’t go with looks when dating her first boyfriend but agreed to date him because he adored her.

Looks aside, everyone can tell Bunny is too good for her boyfriend. And it isn’t long before he shows his true colours. Realizing what a nasty scumbag he is, Bunny dumps her boyfriend on the spot, asserting she can date a better-looking man. Which is how Bunny’s mission to find a handsome boyfriend starts.

The next day, Bunny is too embarrassed to go to school after a video of her punching her ex-boyfriend goes viral. She considers taking time off. But, coming across a handsome-looking guy, Bunny is instantly smitten with suitor #1, Cha Ji-won (Cho Jun-young). Learning he is a sculpture major too, Bunny tears up the leave of absence application and offers to help Ji-won as the department representative.

It must be Bunny’s lucky day. On her way back from showing Ji-won around the school, Bunny runs into suitor #2, Hwang Jae-yeol (Lee Chae-min), a second-year visual design major. But things won’t go that easy for Bunny. And she unwittingly rubs Jae-yeol the wrong way on multiple occasions. Between Bunny accidentally smashing Jae-yeol’s tablet while trying to stop him from tripping and ruining his outfit after getting an upset stomach and vomiting on him, Jae-yeol is set on taking revenge on Bunny.

On the contrary, things are going smoothly between Bunny and Ji-won. They meet again at the freshman welcome party, where we learn Ji-won is a returning student. More importantly, he is the grandson of a conglomerate’s chairman. Hearing Ji-won is a third-generation chaebol, Bunny is taken aback. But Ji-won wants her to treat him casually.

“I doubt I’d get my happy ending under the cherry blossom petals.”

The next day, Jae-yeol looks like he is out for blood. Thus, Bunny runs for her life and hides behind Ji-won so Jae-yeol won’t reach her. But things happen, and Bunny ends up tripping and falling on the ground. While trying to maintain her balance, Bunny pulls Jae-yeol down with her, and they fall on top of each other. On the upside, Bunny gets to live a “romantic” moment of having cherry blossom petals flutter around her and her “boo,” although this moment is anything but romantic.

Startled, Bunny pushes Jae-yeol away and flees with Ji-won, who feels jealous of Jae-yeol and is relieved when Bunny says he is nothing but a debtor she must repay for smashing his tablet. Getting a call from someone saved as “First Love,” Ji-won takes off, leaving Bunny to wonder who “First Love” is. (We later learn she is Ji-won’s sister, and Bunny laughs at the misunderstanding.) But Jae-yeol catches up with her soon and has her take notes for him since, you know, he can’t write anything without his tablet. But it is all an excuse to keep Bunny around him.

To settle her debt to Jae-yeol, Bunny gets a part-time job at an exhibition by Artist Jay, where she comes across suitor #3, Jo Ah-rang (Kim Hyun-jin). Fascinated by how well-versed Bunny is in art, Ah-rang asks her out for coffee. Unlike the other two suitors, Ah-rang isn’t a college student but a 26-year-old adult. But that won’t stop Bunny from picturing herself with him like she did with the other two, only for the sweet dream to turn into a nightmare when Jae-yeol appears in her dream to collect the debt.

But for all his gruffness, Jae-yeol has a considerate side to him. When Bunny gets her clothes muddied, he covers Bunny with his shirt. (It was hilarious how Bunny kept turning him down because she didn’t want to add to the debt in case she ruined his shirt.) Also, Jae-yeol teams up with Bunny on a project and does all the work after a misunderstanding has him mistakenly believing Bunny broke her arm. Not that his kindness lasts for long. Just after Jae-yeol figures out the truth, he returns to his old self and tortures Bunny.

“There is no reason for us to see each other now.”

Tired from taking all those notes, Bunny enters a strength showdown where the first prize is the latest model tablet. Luckily, Bunny came in first. But receiving the tablet from her, Jae-yeol looks rather sad, as if he has lost something more important to him than the tablet. The guy is falling for Bunny before he can realize it. Without Bunny around, Jae-yeol can’t focus on anything and keeps hallucinating about her.

Meanwhile, Bunny is excited about meeting Artist Jay, who is coming to their school as a guest lecturer. After the exhibition, she became a big fan of his and couldn’t wait to see him in person. And wouldn’t you know it? Jay is none other than Ah-rang, who is also happy to see Bunny again. As we end this week, Jae-yeol races to see Bunny, asserting he wants to keep seeing her. And now, Bunny is stuck between three handsome guys, each of whom wants to win her over.

Crushology 101 Opening Week Musings

The premise might be nothing groundbreaking, but the premiere week had enough fun elements to keep things interesting. Also, there is plenty of time for the drama to stand out in its own way and give us a refreshing take on this campus romance. The cast is doing a good job, too. So, for now, things look promising for the drama to unfold into an entertaining watch.

Bunny’s situation might seem enviable on the outside, yet we can see how perplexing it will be for her to have three guys pursuing her. Not to mention that suitor #4 has yet to show up and try to woo her as well. One moment, Bunny is jealous after spotting Ji-won with a girl whom she later learns is his sister, and the next moment, she is swooning over Jae-yeol’s looks. And there is also the matter of Ah-rang/Jay, whom Bunny is charmed by. It is so confusing for Bunny to be caught in this situation.

It is too early to say anything. But as things stand, Jae-yeol is the most likely candidate to win Bunny’s heart. And it isn’t just because he is played by Lee Chae-min. Jae-yeol might seem cold, but he has a warm side to him that appears when Bunny is around. Also, we don’t think Bunny hates Jae-yeol that much as not to want to see him again. Bunny might be attracted to Ji-won, but he is just a friend to her. Also, her admiration for Ah-rang mostly stems from viewing him as a role model. Still, let’s just buckle up and enjoy the ride.
