Crushology 101 Episodes 7 and 8 Highlights

“You kissed me on purpose in front of her, didn’t you?”

Pulling out of the kiss, Bunny is rightfully offended by how Jae-yeol used her to get Yeo-reum off his back. The next morning, Bunny asks Jae-yeol for an explanation. (Are they now dating?) But he doesn’t say anything, getting Bunny further disappointed. At least, Jae-yeol knows he acted selfishly and hurt Bunny with his actions.

More trouble lies ahead for Jae-yeol when his mother gets caught in a scandal. Her latest boyfriend is a professor at Jae-yeol’s school. But Mr. Boyfriend kept his married status from Jae-yeol’s mother. And when caught, he made it seem she was the one who seduced him. Coming upon his mother getting her hair pulled by the professor’s wife, Jae-yeol apologizes to the wife and drags his mother away.

Feeling victimized, Jae-yeol’s mother wonders what she did wrong to deserve to be humiliated. Wasn’t the professor in the wrong for fooling her and taking advantage of her feelings? Jae-yeol’s mother’s words resonate with him, further elevating his guilt. Apologizing to Bunny, Jae-yeol asserts that what he did was selfish, but he never meant to take advantage of her.

Bunny’s anger abates a bit. But it all goes down the drain when Bunny heads to drop off some porridge for a sick Jae-yeol, and Yeo-reum opens the door. Still, Jae-yeol is innocent in all of this. He didn’t even know Yeo-reum was there. She got in while he was sleeping, as the passcode hadn’t changed.

“Why did you come up onstage?”

It is time for the school’s festival, the most awaited event of the year. The highlight is the confession tree, where students leave confession cards for their love interests, and the MC reads them out and calls the couple to the stage. The MC, none other than Yeo-reum, is shocked when a card has Bunny’s name on it. Understandably, she assumes it is Jae-yeol, but the look on his face doesn’t suggest so. (Or, so it seems.)

Calling Bunny to the stage, everyone is curious to see who left the card for her. But when no one shows up, people assume it was a prank and start whispering. Then, Ji-won surprises everyone, most of all Bunny, and comes on stage. As expected, Ji-won didn’t write the card but went to the stage to help Bunny. Not that he tells her any of that. So, Bunny is left to think that Ji-won wrote the card, getting her bemused.

In fact, Jae-yeol wrote the card, but the hesitant look on his face when called to the stage made Ji-won step in, as he doesn’t want Bunny to be with a guy who makes her wonder about his true feelings for her. (Later, the drama hints that suitor #4, Jin Hyun-O (Hong Min-ki), might be the one who wrote the card. But nothing is for certain.) To his credit, Jae-yeol tries to clarify things with Bunny. But once again, it all goes south because of Yeo-reum. Doesn’t she have anything better to do than chase after Jae-yeol?

Just as we are about to bang our heads against the wall from frustration, the drama hits us with a sudden twist. A news article is released, alleging that Yeo-reum’s mother committed fraud. Through flashbacks, we see Yeo-reum’s mother hounding her for money. And when Yeo-reum has no money left to give, the nasty mother shifts her focus to Jae-yeol. Desperate to keep her family situation a secret from Jae-yeol, Yeo-reum broke up with him abruptly and left Seoul.

In the present, Yeo-reum vows she won’t let Jae-yeol go this time. And while we feel for Yeo-reum because of what she had to go through, clinging onto Jae-yeol, though he is uncomfortable with it, isn’t the right thing to do. Yeo-reum can see that Jae-yeol and Bunny like each other, but instead of respecting Jae-yeol’s decision, she jumps at any chance to come between them. Not that Jae-yeol is any better. The way Jae-yeol goes along with Yeo-reum’s whims is also annoying. Can’t the guy draw the line once and for all?

“Why do you care whether or not I am dating Ji-won?”

Things happen, and the quartet ends up sitting together for dinner. The mood is awkward, but Yeo-reum adds to it by commenting on how Ji-won and Bunny make a good couple. They might as well thank her for playing matchmaker at the festival. As if it isn’t already tense, Jae-yeol spews harsh words about Bunny driving him crazy because she keeps hanging out with Ji-won. Seriously!

Unable to handle the situation any longer, Bunny takes off with Ji-won, leaving Jae-yeol and Yeo-reum behind to continue their dinner. But Jae-yeol can’t keep up the act any longer. Apologizing to Yeo-reum for hating her in the past, oblivious to her suffering, Jae-yeol asserts they should now break up for real. Then he follows after Bunny. Ji-won tells Bunny not to go to Jae-yeol, but the girl has already made up her mind. Giving us a proper kiss this time, Bunny and Jae-yeol are now official.

Crushology 101 Episodes 7 and 8 Musings

A couple getting together is good news, but some issues still need to be addressed before we can celebrate Bunny and Jae-yeol’s happily ever after. Jae-yeol might have a lot of emotional baggage because of his mother and Yeo-reum. But he should stop hurting people by saying things he doesn’t mean and be more honest about his feelings. Instead of hurting Bunny with his words at the restaurant, he could have said he was jealous because he likes her. Likewise, Bunny should act more confidently and not let anyone make her waver like Yeo-reum did.

There is also the issue with Ji-won. We thought he would confess his feelings to Bunny following the confession card incident. But alas, nothing has changed. He only hints subtly at it without explicitly saying anything. Still, many signs are piling up that Ji-won likes her, and Bunny can no longer brush it off as Ji-won being nice. For now, Bunny pretends not to see the elephant in the room. Yet we can tell the dynamics have shifted in her friendship with Ji-won.

Ji-won might already know the answer, but he still needs to get it off his chest and confess his feelings to Bunny so he can move on. They can decide to remain friends or not afterward. But if left unaddressed, the situation might cause more harm to all the involved parties.
