K-Drama First Look: Fulfilling Lifelong Dreams In “Navillera” For Song Kang And Park In Hwan

Song Kang is Netflix’s man of the hour. Landing his 3rd drama for the streaming giant, he top-bills a heartwarming story of an aspiring talented young dancer, Lee Chae Rok.

Fresh from the teenage love drama Love Alarm Song Kang returns to Netflix. This time, he leaps and dances gracefully into our hearts. Together with Park In Hwan as an unexpected student, the duo share unforgettable moments onscreen that leaves viewers wanting for more.

Navillera Opening Week Story

Na Chae Rok, although he is a talented ballet dancer, cannot focus on training. Because of his rough past, Chae Rok still lives like he’s making up for the mistakes of his father, who is in jail. Living without parents, Chae Rok encourages himself and leaves himself notes on sticky pads. He is a sad and lonely boy, who is enveloped in distrust of the world.

The young boy takes on part-time jobs to support himself. Instead of focusing on his ballet training, he takes on odd jobs. Despite the taunting bullying from a former schoolmate Yang Ho Beom, Chae Rok presses on.

“I’ve never done anything I wanted to do in my entire life.”

Park Il Hwan’s character, Sim Deok Chool, is a dedicated family man. A devoted father, a hardworking civil servant, Deok Chool followed the norm. Despite realizing a love for ballet at a young age, he set his dreams aside to follow what was expected of him.

However, after a devastating loss, and belatedly realizing that time is running out, Deok Chool makes a decision. One day he appears at the door of a ballet studio. He watches with fascination as Chae Rok gracefully leaps across the floor.

Deok Chool finally decides to give in to pursuing his childhood dream. He timidly inquires about becoming a student, much to Chae Rok’s chagrin. Unfortunately, for the latter, his teacher Seun Joo gives Deok Chool a chance.

He decides that Chae Rok will be Deok Chool’s teacher, and that Deok Chool becomes Chae Rok’s manager.

Navillera Opening Week Musings

The opening week of Navillera was charming and straight-forward. Presenting the two main characters in two very different scenarios, viewers are drawn to their stories.

Chae Rok’s unfortunate start in life keeps him from reaching for his dreams. Perhaps trying to repay for a sin his father committed in the past, he feels that he doesn’t deserve happiness and success. Instead, he works odd jobs and only allows himself to practice ballet once work is over. His talent is wasted because he can’t get past the blame he put upon himself.

Admittedly, I hope that Song Kang’s character Chae Rok lightens up in Navillera. Right off the bat, the angsty portrayal of Chae Rok is too familiar, right after taking on the long-awaited but disappointing Love Alarm 2. I am looking forward to hopefully more light and heartwarming moments between Chae Rok and Deok Chool.

Catch Navillera every Monday and Tuesday on Netflix.
