Now We Are Breaking Up Opening Week Story

“Every designer hopes that each piece they design would be come a beloved classic, but trends are always fleeting.”

Prioritizing material achievements, Ha Young-eun (Song Hye Kyo) is a diligent design team leader of a local fashion company, The One. At a Fashion Week held in Busan, she is keen to meet a French businessman for a collaboration. She also ends up being taken over by her hormones and spent a passionate night with Yoon Jae-kook (Jang Ki Yong), an elusive star photographer, who has his own rules while working in the industry.

When Young-eun’s boss, also dear friend, Hwang Chi-sook, refuses to meet a blind date because of her frustration with her recent boy toy, Young-eun agrees to stand in as Chi-sook. Fascinated by the level of being unbothered, Young-eun has, Jae-kook agrees to work as an impromptu photographer for Young-eun’s team who lost the important presentation file they need for the partnership proposal.

After completing the photo shoot, the result becomes insignificant as French brand Olivier has already signed up with The One’s competitor owing to the promising profits. Young-eun who pleads for a shot with the French businessman ends up getting humiliated. But Jae-kook rescues her and reveals his identity as famed photographer J.

“Right now, I’m still trying to break up with him.”

Mutual attraction flows between Young-eun and Jae-kook but the former knowing her friend has taken an interest in Jae-kook opted to not complicate her life.

However, without her asking for help, Jae-kook finds himself doing favors for Young-eun. Like contacting his close noona friend to fill in an important event which Young-eun is in charge.

Thinking their fleeting connection won’t progress further, they go separate ways. Heading to go back to France, Jae-kook learns from his noona sister who Young-eun is. Surprised to see Jae-kook preparing for the pictorial when he’s supposed to be back in Paris, Young-eun confronts a question about a person who seems to be kept in her fondest and most painful memories.

Now We Are Breaking Up Opening Week Musings

From a steamy opening scene to faint seduction, Now We Are Breaking Up closed its opening week on a high note with a poignant scene. The hype can be justified for this highly-anticipated series.

Done in a skillful manner like the office setting the story it will revolve to, Now We Are Breaking Up follows South Korea’s trademark romance story. While the plot is not something revolutionary, the storytelling would appeal to people who have a permissive and realistic approach when engaging in relationships.

Moreover, I like how its melodrama vibe seems to follow a new kind, deviating from the usual emotionally taxing tone.

Catering to the middle-aged career people, the acquiescent yet ambitious picture of Young-eun represents an empowered woman. Choosing her career over romance, her outlook in the story is the best representation of a person who is not afraid to swerve from the society-dictated definition of happiness and life.

What stood out so far was the modish packaging and nicely-paced narrative of this series. The eloquent screenplay also complements the intricate delineations of the characters, particularly the lead love pairing. This drama also made me realize how less-represented the “workplace” themed series this year in K-Dramaland. Thus, if consistently done following the originally set color, vibrancy and emotion; it won’t be surprising for the series to keep a loyal following.

That cliffhanger got our attention since we don’t know how Jae-kook’s conflicted heart would survive the attraction from the woman who was hinted to be the reason why her brother died. Whether he’s eyeing for vengeance or love or both, we can’t wait for these answers to unfold.
