Excited for its premiere, Big Mouth lead cast members and director proudly talk about their great chemistry and atmosphere on set.
MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama, Big Mouth follows the story of a low-winning rate lawyer who gets entangled in a murder case. In his involvement, they dig into the identity of a genius swindler and the tainted principles of the privileged class to protect his family.
Expectations for the noir genre drama increase as it is a collaboration of Director Oh Choong Hwan, recognized for his past works Start-up, Hotel Del Luna, While You Were Sleeping, and Doctors, with Writers Jung Kyung Soon and Jang Young Chul from Vagabond.
At the drama’s press conference Director Oh Choong Hwan, together with the lead cast members Lee Jong Suk, Im Yoon Ah, Kim Joo Heon, Ok Ja Yeon, and Yang Kyung Won shared their outstanding energy and teamwork while filming.
A Drama Full of Twists
Expressing his feelings as a director of the drama, Director Oh shares how the drama is still enjoyable to watch even though it has a lot of stories to tell about society.
“This is my fifth drama. I think I can intuitively say that this is a very interesting drama. Huge stories and social stories are important, but it is a drama that viewers can enjoy.”
Despite having a lot of projects in the past, the director finds Big Mouth the most interesting to look forward to every episode.
“Among all the dramas I’ve done, I’m curious about the next episode and fall in love the moment I watch it.“
He continues, encouraging the viewers on the points to expect on its broadcast.
“The unexpected twists and turns, and the actors acting so well, it seems to have become a drama that shines the moment I watch it. I hope you enjoy watching it.“
Rolling on the Dirt for the drama
Explaining how they work on set, the director comments on how enjoyable it was to work with the cast.
“We select actors based on their personality. It was definitely fun to work with proven actors.“
Adding to what he has said, he reveals what the actors went through while filming the drama.
“Usually, when I do dramas, I change one or two pairs of shoes, but (the actors) acted a lot on the dirty floor.“
Noticing that, he shares that there were times that the actors had a hard time because they faced a lot of physical and emotional situations while filming.
Kim Joo Hun, who portrays former star prosecutor Choi Do-ha, comments on how amazed he was by the energy at the filming site.
“Of course, it was very good. As the director said, the people in the prison were really rolling on the dirty floor to shoot. I went there, but the energy itself was different. I was really surprised.“
Thinking how they’re doing a great job, the actor is sure of how enjoyable the scene would be on its release, and also praises the director for being open and letting him act freely.
“This is going to be really fun. It’s going to come out well.”
Powerful Teamwork and Atmosphere on set
Portraying Park Chang-ho’s wife, Im Yoona plays Go Mi-ho, who is also a nurse. Feeling joyful while filming, the actress thanks the staff and fellow actors for the memorable experience.
“I think it’s almost the first time I’ve filmed such a long time. As such, I made many memories while going to various places. The actors and staff liked it a lot, so I had fun filming and acting.“
Proud of their teamwork as members of the cast, actress Ok Ja Yeon, who portrays Hyun Joo-hee, the hospital director at a university hospital recounts the first time she met Lee Jong Suk and her awe for Im Yoona.
“I met Lee Jong Suk for the first time, and it was an honor because I liked his aura so much. I saw Yoona while reading, and she was so pretty, I said, ‘What kind of acting do you do with a person like that? It was so much fun to breathe together.”
Moreover, the actress talks about Kim Joo Heon, acknowledging how much she has learned from him.
“Kim Joo Hun is playing the role of my husband, and I learned a lot. He’s stylish and edgy.“
Admiring her colleagues, the actress feels confident about how enjoyable the drama would be.
“(Yang Kyung Won) This brother is really crazy. He’s so free in front of the camera and I’m grateful for his inspiration. I think the drama will be tight and fun because I’m with such good fellow actors.“
Recognizing the strengths of others, actor Yang Kyung Won, who plays Gong Ji-hoon also shares his wishes on filming more together with the cast.
“Natural actors are very firm. I envied the firmness and strength that was different from what I felt in my appearance. Unfortunately, we couldn’t film a lot together.”
He also jokingly states what Kim Joo Heon’s career would be if he had not been an actor because of his kindness.
“I can already feel that Joo Heon is considerate in what he says and does. If he wasn’t an actor, he was a religious person. It must have happened.”
Like actress Ok Ja Yeon, the actor also looks up to Im Yoon Ah and compliments her sincerity in acting.
“Yoona is really sincere. Doesn’t she do a lot of activities? It’s the first time I’ve met her as an actress, but she’s also really sincere in acting. She is a person who thinks a lot and is full of good greed…”
In addition to that, he also appreciates the humorous and encouraging energy Lee Jong Suk has while filming.
“If I had to describe Jong Suk in one word, it would be ‘encouragement’. He always compliments me a lot. He does something ridiculous like, ‘You became handsome.’ It encourages me even though I say ‘no.‘”
With the compliments he received, actor Yang Kyung Won states how great Lee Jong Suk is.
“He is a person who makes people work hard and inspires them. Thank you so much. He is a wonderful person.“
On Working with the Director
Coming back to the small screen after three years after his discharge, actor Lee Jong Suk takes on the role of the lawyer in the drama, Park Chang-ho. As this is his second time working with Director Oh, the actor commends the director’s ability to make the atmosphere on set enjoyable.
“The director’s set is always fun and comfortable. I think the director makes the atmosphere like that. My role itself was difficult, but I think I enjoyed filming it.”
Also praising Director Oh, actress Ok Ja Yeon expresses how touched she was by the director’s influence on the energy on set.
“It’s not really empty words, but it seems to be the best. The director seems to play a big role in influencing the atmosphere. There were many times when I was really moved. I was in a privileged role, so I filmed a lot in a pleasant and good environment, and sometimes I went to the rough scene as if I were on a field trip. It was so hard even to me.“
On the other hand, actor Yang Kyung Won honestly tells how he looked forward to coming out every day even though he was not called every day to film.
He continues to tell how similar the director was to his parents in giving him freedom while acting, and still appreciates the treatment he received.
“What I felt from the director was that he raised me very similar to the way my parents raised me. ‘Do whatever you want’ inside a large fence that doesn’t look like that on set…I’m so grateful that you handled me with consideration.”
Admitting that this is his first time working on this type of genre, Director Oh states how he took a lot of time in preparing how to work on it, such as filming, lighting, and editing.
Lastly, Director Oh encourages viewers to watch the drama as he gave his best in respecting the genre while also taking into consideration the tone of the story.
“Essentially, I have been thinking a lot about the need to have perfection in the genre while maintaining the tone of the story and what I have. I hope you watch the show and…I want to hear that it’s okay.“
