“Lovers” Captures Poignant Romance In Unveiled Teaser Poster

Lovers depicts the romance of a lover in the backdrop of Qing invasion of Joseon. It follows stories of the people who cultivated hope in times of hardship.

The drama reunites Namgoong Min with Director Kim Sung Yong with whom he worked in the series The Veil. Penning the script is writer Hwang Jin Young who wrote Rebel: The Thief Who Stole The People and The King’s Daughter, Soo Baek-hyang.

Namgoong Min (One Dollar Lawyer, Doctor Prisoner) portrays Lee Jang-hyun as a complex character with a natural playfulness. But inside, he has darkness not revealed to anyone.

Playing the female lead Yu Gil-chae is Ahn Eun Jin (The One and Only, Hospital Playlist). Gil-chae is a well-mannered lady from a prestigious family. She is a snobbish and arrogant person who believes that she is the center of the world and that she is God’s gift to men. But she gradually matured as she experienced the suffering of war and came to truly fall in love with a man.

With just one teaser video shown earlier, Lovers, which is emerging as the best historical drama masterpiece in 2023 declares installment broadcast.

An MBC official explains the decision is to enhance the completeness of the narrative.

Lovers is a 20-episode project, and we started production with the two-part system in mind from the beginning. Not only terrestrial, but also general, cable, and OTT dramas were flooded with content to the extent that more than 160 dramas were produced in Korea last year alone. It has become a very important production factor not only to tell the story of the drama itself, but also to decide the number of episodes for immersive viewing. In order to show it attractively, we decided to broadcast it in two parts, each with 10 episodes.”

Director Kim Seong-yong, who was in charge of directing, also expressed confidence in the two parts planned for the series.

Through this, we expect to be able to tell viewers more solid stories of people suffering during the Qing invasion. Here, the story of Lee Jang-hyun and Yu Gil-chae going back and forth between Joseon and Qing Dynasty will be another viewing point for sealing parts 1 and 2 for Lovers. Their tangled lives are especially dramatic. The last episode of Part 1, will give viewers a deep lingering feeling of waiting for Part 2“.

MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama Lovers will be broadcast for the first time at 9:50 pm on Friday, August 4, 2023.
