K-Drama Review: “The Glory Part 1” Gratifies With Intoxicating and Ruminative Revenge-Driven Story
Writer Kim Eun Sook is known for numerous hit melodramas and romantic comedies such as Secret Garden, Descendants of the Sun, Goblin, Mr. Sunshine and The King: Eternal Monarch.
Among these, many of her works led the Korean Wave beyond Korea and established several of her actors as Hallyu stars. Following her undefeated box office success, Writer Kim challenged a genre drama for the first time since her debut.
As seen in The Glory, there is subdued melodrama as well. It efficiently layered the poignancy of the emotions of the lead character, Moon Dong-eun.
Correspondingly, the viewers are raving about the varied connections featured in the story. Despite his back story not being fully unveiled yet, Jo Yeo-jeong (Lee Do Hyun) and his willingness to back up Dong-eun’s revenge felt like a unique romance without the fluffy side.
Likewise, the premeditated attraction that Dong-eun cast on Ha Do-young (Jung Sung Il) also draws admiration for its engrossing vibe.
Notably, the charm of all the characters that are loved by the viewers, and the relationship between each character are delicately set. Thus, being immersed in their respective worlds is easy.
Intentionally creating a beautiful love story syncing well with a revenge-driven plot, Writer Kim ensured the melodrama vibe is subtly felt.
In fact, at the press conference, she admitted to having worked hard in creating the connection between Dong-eun and Yeo-jeong.
“It was difficult to write a scene featuring Joo Yeo-jeong and Mun Dong-eun. When I submitted the draft, the director would ask, ‘Isn’t it a genre? Is the genre
romcom or melodrama?’ It’s so pretty.” That’s why I continued to work on limning a reasonable distance between them.”
