Brain Works

Brain Works Episode 3 Highlights

“Our brain makes up reasons when asked to elaborate.”

Ha-Ru’s plan to destroy Myung-Se’s reputation backfires when the news report reveals that he was actually doing a good deed and not receiving a bribe. It turns out that Myung-Se lent money to an ex-convict who was trying to keep his business afloat during the pandemic, and he is now repaying that debt. However, he is still persistent in his search for Myung-Se’s weakness.

Myung-Se has been getting a lot of praise from his coworkers since word of his good deeds got around. On the other hand, his ex-wife Kim Mo-Ran called to tell him he was being too naive.

During work, Myung-Se updates Ha-Ru on their latest case. Ha-Ru initially brushes him off, but when he mentioned that the victim’s husband claimed he couldn’t be the murderer because he couldn’t recognize his wife’s face, Ha-Ru showed interest.

Evidence gathered indicate that strangulation was the cause of death and that someone burned the body afterward. Because the victim is unrecognizable, the victim’s sister came to identify the body. She confirmed that the body was her sister Thuong by examining the tattoo near her collarbone.

“Humans are pitiful beings who don’t know that they lie all the time.”

During Lee Jong-Koo’s interrogation, he admits that he and his wife had an argument and wanted a divorce because of money. He claims that he still could not identify his wife’s face after three years of marriage and living together. Ha-Ru uses this information to conclude that the suspect suffers from prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness. It’s a condition where a person has difficulty identifying familiar faces.

After a while, Hoai, the victim’s best friend and her boyfriend, emerge as a possible suspect. Myung-Se and Ha-Ru track Hoai’s lover, who said that he believes Hoai is the killer. He reveals that the two previously fought because Hoai owed Thoung the money she needed to leave her husband and move into a new apartment.

However, further evidence attest that Hoai had already left town and vanished without a trace.

“I must be frustrating to watch. Even I hate my personality.”

The chief’s harsh criticism of Captain Seol as a freeloader drives her to tears. Myung-Se and Ha-Ru defend her, and Myung-Se even bought her dinner to make sure she was doing fine.

Still hurt by her boss’ words, Captain Seol goes out to find clues on her own. She finds a picture of Hoai and Thoung together and discovers they both had the same tattoo. She immediately tells Myung-Se that she had found evidence. However, on her way back, she got into an accident and had a nail stuck in her head.

Even when unconscious, Ha-Ru finds a way to communicate with Captain Seol by scanning her brain in MRI and looking for brain signals that indicate her answers. Eventually, they found out that the burnt body was actually Hoai. Ha-Ru then concludes that the murderer fabricated the evidence to make it look like Thoung had died.

Looking for answers, Ha-Ru and Myung-Se visit Thoung’s husband and found a suspicious-looking freezer. While looking for clues, they got locked in a freezer by an unknown person.

Desperate to get out, Myung-Se bangs loudly on the door, causing Ha-Ru to get a headache from the noise. It was followed by a brief flashback of his younger self sitting alone inside the car and someone banging on the car window.

Ha-Ru then reveals that he started to get headaches starting kindergarten after a car accident.

“I dislike disrespect more than murder.”

In another scene, Dr. Hwan Dong Woo, who poisoned his patients, tries to get his book published. The publishing house, however, declines his proposal because it was boring. As a result of the man’s rudeness, Dong Woo threatens to kill his daughter, sending him into a panic.

Moreover, Shin Ji Hyun discovers a letter for Ha-Ru written by Han Dong Woo at his house. The director, who she promptly alerted, was shocked and terrified.

Meanwhile, trying to survive the cold, Myung-Se and Ha-Ru maintain their body temperature by hugging each other tightly.

Brain Works Episode 3 Musings

When compared to the first two episodes, this one has much better pacing. It’s adorable how Mo-Ran and Myung-Se bicker and tease each other but secretly care about one another. Seeing Ha-Ru’s character get excited like a kid about morbid things is also entertaining.

Additionally, it’s sweet to see Myung-Se and Ha-Ru look out for Captain Seol since she has difficulty standing up for herself. It’s heartening to see Myung-Se comforting Captain Seol. However, since she initially had a crush on Ha-Ru, their awkwardly romantic moment made me wonder who she would end up with.

Moreover, the bromance between the two male leads is apparent, and the scene of the two of them tightly hugging is hilarious.

Lastly, it is good that we are starting to get to see a glimpse of Ha-Ru’s backstory. I’m excited to know about his connection to Dong-Woo and if he’s responsible for the car accident.
