Our Blues Episode 3 Highlights
Walking on a Tightrope
Han-soo is getting more and more agitated as the days go by. Not only is his bank account almost emptied, but his wife and daughter are persistently begging him to let them come home to Seoul.
On top of that, even his siblings are also frustrated and tired of him. Still unable to let go of the idea of her daughter making it big in the golfing industry, Han-Soo believes he has no choice but to take advantage of Eun-Hee.
As they passed a familiar street, she felt nostalgic and reminisced about their first kiss. Han-Soo puts his arm on Eun-Hee’s shoulder, and the subtle awkward tension between the two returns. Trying hard to use Eun-Hee’s feelings, Han-Soo takes any opportunity that arises to charm Eun-Hee along their trip.
However, during their car ride, Eun-Hee mentioned how it annoys her that she is regarded as a friend you can ask for money. She told Han-Soo how most people remember her only when they need money.
This made Han-Soo nervous and quiet. Afterwards, they embark on a lovely trip riding on a boat, the skyline transit, buying cotton candy while reminiscing their lost youth and finally, spending the night drinking wine at the hotel.
The Walls Have Ears
Troubled and feeling unfair, Han-suk rants at the fish market. She orders soju from In-Gwon’s stall and vents her disbelief and anger towards her brother Han-Soo who asked her to lend him 200 million won.
This piques In-Gwon’s interest. Moreover, word spreads fast on the auction site. As Eun-Hee says, the folks there is the type who would even keep count of their neighbor’s underwear. After bringing Han-Soo to the auction site, people were curious if they were dating.
In particular, they are intrigued if the hot-headed and stingy Eun-Hee is finally in a relationship. Subsequently, Myeong-Bo, who recently heard rumors from their VIP client, and started asking other friends if Han-Soo had asked to borrow money from them.
Hence, when Myeong-Bo is called In-Gwon, Ho-Sik, the nosy former lover of Eun-Hee, gets riled up after hearing the rumors and joins the lads in a coffee shop meeting. As a result, Han-Soo’s efforts of concealing his financial status went down the drain.
Subsequently, while they are dining together at Eun Hee’s bar with Jung Joon (Kim Woo Bin) and Young-Ok (Han Ji Min), they find out that Han-soo and Eun Hee are together Mokpo.
The lads kept calling Eun Hee, warning her about Han-soo’s real intentions. Moreover, they force Eun Hee to come home and tell her not to lend Han-soo any money.
On Confessions, Confrontations & Dejections
Han-Soo returns to his hotel room and receives a call from his family. His daughter asked him about her plans to move to Seoul and stop playing golf. Han-Soo bitterly questions her daughter Bo Ram why she is not happy despite all his efforts.
He assured his wife and daughter that he was already doing something about their financial problems. However, his wife described their difficulties abroad and begged him to let them come home.
Han-soo seems dejected, furiously disconnecting the call. He throws his phone and collapses, sobbing. Not long after, he heads to the bathroom to wash away his tears and rehearse how he will bring up the 200 million won in front of Eun Hee.
It did not cross his mind at all that their other friends from Jeju have already conducted a background check. In fact, After the revelation, the mood sours while Han-Soo and Eun-Hee share a bottle of wine. Eventually, Eun-Hee spoke up and questioned Han-Soo about his real intentions.
Eun-Hee makes Han-Soo realize how much he has underestimated the close-knit relationships Jeju folks have. She lashed out a bit by hitting Han-Soo with a towel while crying. Han-Soo attempts to explain himself, but Eun-Hee is already heartbroken and asks how much of their Mokpo trip was based on deception.
Additionally, Eun-Hee asks what she is to him and whether she is even, Han-Soo really considers her a friend.
What It Means To Be A Friend
After hearing out Han-Soo’s confession of planning to use her, Eun-Hee declares that she has lost a lifelong friend and asked him to leave. Before leaving the hotel room, Han-Soo said that the reason he didn’t ask for money right away was that he noticed Eun-Hee’s lack of happiness in life.
He said that the trip is not entirely a deception and he did not want to ruin Eun-Hee’s memories of him. Han-Soo told Eun-Hee that she always gives more than what she receives from others.
Apparently, he does not want Eun-Hee to do the same with him. Though ironically, he has done much more damage by using her feelings to take advantage of her.
When Ho-sik calls Eun Hee again, she snaps and lectures Ho-Sik and In-Gwon. She told them she did not give Han-Soo money. Not just that, but she questioned the two about what makes them any different. They, too, mostly care about her because they need her for money.
While In-Gwon interjects, claiming that what differentiates them from Han-Soo is that they do not deceive her. She contradicts them and tells them that they are neither real nor good friends.
Eun-Hee reiterates how they had been treating Han-Soo and her so far, pointing out how money changes everyone’s treatment. She sobs, telling them how Han-Soo came to Jeju thinking he had friends, yet all of them turned their backs on him. On top of that, he now has a crushed ego and no one to talk to about his worries.
Good Good-Bye
Upon returning to Jeju from Mokpo, Eun-hee messages Han-Soo and wired him money, saying he should take it. She will just think that her business lost some because Han-Soo needs it more.
However, Han-Soo returned the money and replied to Eun-Hee’s message. He said that he learned a lot from his short stint in Jeju. Likewise, he said that someday when he is stable, he will return and ask them to go to the beach like in the old times. This time around, he will treat them to a meal and drink using his own money.
Eun-Hee, though, with a heavy heart, returns to her daily routine. Meanwhile, Han-Soo emotionally embraces his newly arrived family. As they prepare to depart on a trip, Han-Soo informs his wife and daughter that they may clear their bills with his severance money, which would not leave his family with much, but will allow them to have a bit of fun.
Our Blues Episode 3 Musings
In particular, this episode not only sheds light on acceptance and failed dreams. Our Blues Episode 3 depicted a realistic scenario about the struggle of keeping one’s dignity intact amid a life crisis.
Moreover, the actors and actresses played their roles impeccably and their emotions seemingly burst through the screens. Indeed, expect some tears to be shed as you watch this episode. Because, along with the superb and relatable dialogues, Our Blues successfully conveyed an inspiring and thought-provoking story.
On top of that, it is excellent how adult friendships are defined in this episode and how they showed a mature way of handling confrontations. (We are all so used to catfights and revenge tropes, after all.) With all that said, it is very refreshing and wonderful to watch how this episode was thoughtfully written.
