An unexpected twist of fate awaits Yeongju, Hyeon, In-Gwon and Hosik.

The first four episodes of Our Blues showed that Eun Hui’s friends are not on good terms. In-Gwon and Ho-Sik, who are both hardworking single dads, are like water and oil that cannot be mixed together.

Despite renting apartments in the same building, they are like ticking time bombs every time their paths cross. Little did they know that love bloomed between their children when they did not expect it the most.

Our Blues Episode 5 Highlights

This episode picks up where the previous episodes left Yeongju and Hyeon. After noticing that her period has been delayed for months, she finally tells Hyeon of her worries.

After they struggle to get pregnancy test kits without being seen by their classmates, or any folks from Jeju, Hyeon finally manages to buy three kits for Yeongju. What happens before and after the pregnancy reveal was then narrated in this episode.

It Takes A Village To Raise A Child

Yeonju is Ho-Shik’s daughter. She has been introduced briefly in the first few episodes as a meek and smart girl. However, there is more to her than her quiet demeanor. Yeongju starts her day running. She starts outside of their residence building and runs until she reaches what she considers the edge of Jeju.

Every morning she stops by the end of the seaport to stare at the vast water separating Jeju from the other cities in Korea. She detests her dreary and uninspiring island life in Jeju. She also finds the folks in their community meddlesome. For instance, Eun-Hui keeps trying to nag and lecture her as if she was her mother.

Unfortunately, for Yeongju, Eun Hui is not the only one who acts this way. Every time she goes to the market to run errands, she hates how she has to greet basically everyone she passes by.

In particular, Yeongju finds it bothersome how everyone claims they were her, basically her mother, because they took turns taking care of her when she was a kid. This suffocates her because she is reminded of how motherless she is and how awkward she has lived her life with her father.

Fortunately, she has Hyeon, In-Gwon’s son. He is the only person that makes her life less miserable. In-Gwon and Ho-Sik are clueless that their children bonded and grew close when they were not around.

As the dads of the kids, they are constantly at each other’s throats, they never imagined that their kids would dare fall in love behind their backs.

Although the two not only hide from their fathers, they also pretend as if they are not lovers in school. Hence, none of their classmates knows about their relationship.

Hyeon adores Yeongju a lot, and they seem to be the only ones understanding themselves and their bustling provincial community.

Daddy’s Girl

Although proud of Hyeon, In-Gwon is not doting and lenient toward his son. Contrarily, Ho-Sik is very expressive in cherishing her daughter Yeongju. Both of their fathers work hard in their respective jobs and business in the market to raise them well.

Despite being motherless, their fathers are making sure that the two get to receive an education and have food on their plates.

Notably, Ho-Sik is thoughtful of  Yeongju’s needs. He prioritizes her above all so he puts his dream of sailing the seas with a new fishing boat to a halt, waiting for Yeongju to enter college.

Unfortunately, after the pregnancy test kits result reveal positive results, their little life in Jeju will be turned upside down.

Young Love

After the pregnancy confirmation, Yeongju started being anxious about her future. Her first thought is to have an abortion. It is even more complicated now for her to approach Hyeon at school. Yeong-Ju begins avoiding Hyeon.

Later on, she told him she was pregnant and considered having an abortion. During their talk behind one of their school’s buildings, she said Hyeon it is unfair because they just did it twice and used protection.

Yeongju also warned Hyeon to keep quiet. If anyone finds out and tells their fathers about this, they could not imagine the horrors that would unfold. Their dad would fight each other over trivial things.

What more would happen if they found out that their kids would soon be parents? Thus, Hyeon secretly got more money than he asked for from his father’s stash. He also gave Yeongju a gold ring his mother left him so that Yeongju could afford to have an abortion.

As the days go by, it becomes harder for Yeongju to hide that she is pregnant at school. Unfortunately, she was told that she was almost six months into her pregnancy at the hospital.

The doctor told Yeong-Ju she would undergo a great deal of bleeding. The doctor was hostile toward her. Since she is underage and abortion is still not legal, the doctor asks her to bring parental consent.

After getting more cash, Yeongju goes to another hospital. Hyeon rushes to accompany Yeongju. The doctor in this other hospital is more accommodating. Yeongju also appreciates that Hyeon is with her for emotional support this time.

However, during the ultrasound scan, Hyeon and Yeongju were overwhelmed when they heard the baby’s heartbeat inside Yeongju’s womb.

Our Blues Episode 5 Musings

A Penny for Some Thoughts

This episode effectively stirred various sentiments. Yeongju’s existential crisis is relatable for most people her age with all the worries and dreams they chase. Her yearning for change and thrill in her life also represents the dilemmas of the younger generations.

In fact, this episode is well-written. Not only was it introduced well in the storyline of the series, but the cast members highlighted for this episode also did a marvelous job portraying their characters.

The premise of this episode’s narrative is plausible except for the tiny fact that it took Yeongju 22 weeks, or about five months, to discover that she was pregnant.

Although it may be true that there are cases like this, given that she and Hyeon admitted to having slept together twice. Usually, after missing your period for three months, one would already suspect the possibility of being pregnant. However, it took Yeongju, the most intelligent girl in her class five months before suspecting she is pregnant.

This loophole could be dismissed as maybe Yeongju thought it was just irregular periods. Moreover, since her body frame is petite, it is understandable why at 22 weeks, her baby bump seems more like her stomach is just a bit bloated.

Nonetheless, that is the only tiny loophole. Other details and instances in this episode are all given justice.

Our Blues episode 5 is a cliffhanger that makes viewers want to know more about Hyeon and Yeongju’s relationship. Moreover, the foreshadowing of their fathers’, In-Gwon and Ho-Sik’s past is indeed intriguing.
