Spring Fever Episodes 9 and 10 Highlights

“I am not going to ask you, Uncle. I will ask her directly.”

Avoiding his uncle, Han-gyul decides to confront his mother directly. He heads to Seoul without telling anyone. And Jae-gyu is frantically worried to hear that Han-gyul is in Seoul. Arriving at his mother’s place, that woman plays mother, treating Han-gyul to an expensive meal. And when he asks why she had Jae-gyu raise him despite being alive and well, that shameless woman blurts out excuses about having to work to make money, painting Jae-gyu as the bad guy who stopped her from seeing her son when she went looking for him afterwards.

But then, we witness a call between Jae-gyu and that woman, and learn that he instructed her to say those things in return for agreeing to sell the house they inherited from their father. Jae-gyu would rather have Han-gyul resent him than the boy getting heartbroken after learning his mother abandoned him. But of course, Han-gyul overhears the call between his uncle and that woman and feels miserable.

Calling Se-jin over, Han-gyul is stunned to see that she really came all the way to Seoul to comfort him. He opens up to her about what happened with his mother. And his bad day turns delightful when she mumbles she doesn’t dislike him but has feelings for him. Confessing his love, our young couple’s ship is now sailing, and we hope the grades arc is buried forever.

When he returns home later that night, Han-gyul acts as usual and keeps it a secret from his uncle that he knows the truth. Like uncle, like nephew. They both care about each other so much, but perhaps they could use some honesty.

“Now that people have found out, you can’t be feeling great either.”

Meanwhile, our leads were caught out, and everyone in town has heard they are dating. One annoying teacher makes a fuss about how getting romantically involved with a parent will negatively affect the students. But another supportive teacher urges Bom to follow her heart and not hold back.

Promising not to cause any damage to the school or the students, Bom apologizes for causing concern, and this matter is closed. Still, our leads have another problem to handle. Bom’s mother has heard that she is dating Jae-gyu, and she strongly opposes it. The only clue Bom’s mother knows about Jae-gyu is that he is I-jun’s archenemy, who ran off with his money. So, she rushes over to town to break our leads apart.

“Could you tell me what you don’t like about me specifically?”

Ironically, Bom’s mother gets fascinated by Jae-gyu the moment she meets him after he helps her out when her car breaks down. She calls him her hero and waxes poetic about him, unaware that he is Bom’s boyfriend. And needless to say, Bom’s mother’s tone totally changes after learning Jae-gyu’s identity.

Bom’s mother’s visit causes the nightmares to haunt her again. A date with Jae-gyu cheers her up a bit. However, we can see he is also shaken by the mean comments Bom’s mother spewed about his fashion style. Having eaten something delicious, Jae-gyu suggests they sweat it out. And he teaches Bom some self-defence techniques at her request, though the lesson turns quite romantic.

“If she comes to consult me, I will kindly help her.”

Catching Bom’s mother spying on our leads, I-jun realizes it was wrong of him to secretly update her on Bom’s news and whereabouts. So, he intends to come clean to Bom about everything, including his connection to her mother and his feelings for her. But he gets cold feet when she mentions her plan to sue the ones who wronged her.

Sensing someone is tailing him, Jae-gyu catches Bom’s mother stalking him. He doesn’t see her face, though, as she is wearing a mask. She runs off and is almost hit by a car if not for Jae-gyu jumping in to save her. And he only realizes the stalker’s identity after getting hit by the car.

At the hospital, Bom, Han-gyul, and basically everyone in town stand by Jae-gyu’s bed, worried. But he is safe and sound without as much as a crack in his bones and only a scratch on the palm of his hand, getting the doctor stunned.

“My father…. I killed him.”

When Bom opens up to Jae-gyu about being assaulted by a student’s mother, Jae-gyu suggests they see I-jun and ask for help. But they spot Bom’s mother there and discover their connection. Still, that isn’t the worst that happens. Having realized Jae-gyu is a good person, Bom’s mother accuses I-jun of deliberately badmouthing him out of jealousy. So, I-jun snaps, claiming Jae-gyu committed patricide in the past. And our leads overhear everything.

Through flashbacks, we learn that Jae-gyu’s father was an alcoholic who always came home wasted and beat his son up. I-jun offered to lend Jae-gyu money so he could go to college and escape this hell. But one day, Jae-gyu’s house was set on fire, and his father passed away. Jae-gyu vanished that night with Han-gyul after taking I-jun’s money from his locker.

People gossiped that Jae-gyu deliberately caused the fire to kill his father. And sadly, I-jun believed them. While it was wrong of Jae-gyu to disappear without a word, I-jun should have trusted his friend more instead of believing groundless rumors.

In the present, Bom’s mother returns to Seoul, and I-jun tries to apologize to Bom for lying to her. But she is also mad at him for accusing Jae-gyu of something so horrible without evidence. As the week concludes, Bom goes to see Jae-gyu, and he shockingly admits to killing his father.

Spring Fever Episodes 9 and 10 Musings

Definitely, there is more to Jae-gyu’s “confession” than meets the eye. He probably feels guilty about being unable to save his father that night. We had the benefit of the doubt for I-jun, but he lost our sympathy this week, seeing how little he trusted his friend. No wonder Jae-gyu resented him and refused to apologize for taking the money back then. Still, we hope this plotline gets wrapped up quickly so we can focus on lighter and more interesting plotlines.
