Alchemy of Souls Episode 13 Highlights

Previously, the reality of her soul-shifting hits Mu-deok when she overpowered the eunuch who wants to feed her energy.

Even Yul also had an epiphany about her future after slaying a soul-shifter with his own hands. But Wook is determined to find a way of protecting his master through the ice stone.

Meanwhile, his duels are coming to an end with one last fight that would determine if he can retrieve the blue stone or not.

“Once a soul-shifter runs wild, they’re no longer humans. They are monsters. We cannot stop them from running wild.”

Witnessing Mu-deok feed on the eunuch’s energy, Wook rushes to embrace her when she starts worrying that she’s running wild. At that same moment, Yul is being lectured by Master Jin on why they are reviving the soul shifter. He explains that there’s no turning back for soul-shifters once they run wild.

Suggesting the power of ice stone might be able to help the soul shifter to run wild, Master Park considers the possibility. But he firmly insists on not using that power.

Jin Mu halts his plan to use the soul ejector when the sky signals a looming rain. Mu-deok who finally calmed down deduces how she has opened the celestial basin through her energy.

Finding ways to escape, Wook fathoms his stone’s connection to Prince Won and summons him to rescue them. With a clever plan, he placed the stone on the dead eunuch and taunts Jin Mu that Prince Won is probably on his way to stumble on the petrified eunuch.

Falling on Wook’s trick, Jin Mu returns to the room where he imprisoned Wook and Mu-deok and finds Prince Won really there.

“You cannot judge what is right or wrong merely based on the things you see. There are stories to everything. And fate is made up of numerous stories and relationships.”

Master Lee visits Maidservant Kim and opens up about the fate of Cho Chung who is Jang Gang’s best friend. It turns out he is also Naksu’s father. Briefly touching on the fate of Naksu, Master Lee lectures his crush not to be judgmental of what happened to Cho Chung. It was also revealed that Jang Gang has been searching for her as well.

Back at Cheonbugwan, Prince Won becomes a third wheel to the master-servant that keep on checking each other. Master Park also arrives at Cheonbugwan and is looped into what happened.

Unfortunately, Wook and Mu-deok’s story is invalidated because the Queen came with the dead eunuch who got revived through the power of ice stone.

Wook’s thinking goes straight to his previous deduction of how the ice stone can save Mu-deok from running wild. With her quick thinking, Mu-deok also saved Wook from being punished at Cheonbugwan.

Meanwhile, the broken basin raises curiosity from Prince Won and Jin Mu on who was able to summon the lightning and open the ceiling to break the constellation basin.

“People change because of other people. Find out who showed up just when he began to change.”

Fortunately for Wook and Mu-deok; the eunuch does not have a recollection of what happened in the constellation hall. The Queen suspects that Wook is just hiding his powers.

Unhappy about her situation with Songrim, the Queen chides Jin Mu for underestimating Jang Wook. But he insists that everything that he has been accomplishing does not make sense. The clever Queen realizes quickly to look for the source of his change that pushed him to now have a direction.

Yul checks with Sang-ho about what happened and learns of Wook’s reaction to the ice stone. Being Master Park’s right hand, he thinks that Wook disagrees with destroying the ice stone.

His tendency to defy Master Park follows his easy-go-lucky attitude and he hopes Wook won’t be too free-spirited to that kind of sorcery. He also reminds Yul to keep an eye on his friend.

“You made my heart race. What you just said holds a deeper meaning than I missed you. The cruel assassin has finally replied to my naive and sincere love confession.”

Suggesting they to Danhyanggok, Mu-deok declines as the winter can be too much for them. Wook faintly feels jealous realizing she said a different thing to Yul and hears her reason that she does not want Yul to worry about his bird.

She explains that she’s also scared of them being alone together in case she will run wild. Expressing what he has to do if she goes through it, she genuinely confessed how she won’t be able to bear putting him in pain.

Inevitably, Wook’s heart raced with her sincere words. He is elated to finally receive the answer to his previous love confession and promises to find the ice stone for her.

All pumped to train, they return to Jang’s residence and find Master Lee who wants to bring Wook to go fishing. Initially refusing the offer, Master Lee uses Mu-deok to convince Wook for his preparatory lesson to master “chisu”.

Master Park visits Lady Jin to ask for help in tracking soul shifters but she refused. Their conversation hints at a close severing of friendly relationships as well. Unaware of the growing animosity between their elders, Dang-gu and Cho-yeon look forward to sealing their relationship once Bu-yeon is found.

While So-yi is being prepared to assume the identity of Jin family’s first daughter with a mark and scar on the missing Bu-yeon; the same mark and scar are highlighted on Mu-deok’s body.

“If I had not left you there in the mountains, you would not have to suffer this fate where you have to hold back your tears and pretend to be someone else. But even now, I can’t seem to step up.”

As promised by Songrim, Dang-gu and Yul oversee the construction of the constellation basin. Wook continues to fish with Master Lee. During lunch, Wook was reminded to go home as Maidservant Kim has prepared a memorial service. He does not know though that it is for Naksu’s father.

Yul sees Mu-deok weeping in front of the memorial service altar. Inwardly, he blames himself for the fate Naksu suffered. Seeing Wook back he delivers the order for his friend to return back to Songrim. He also tells him of his plans to return to his hometown.

Thinking about what he saw earlier, Wook ponders if his friend Yul knows about Mu-deok hence his cryptic words of bringing someone along when he goes back to his hometown.

The next day, for his final duel, a change of prize occurred with Mu-deok being the prize for the winner. Instead of the expected competitor, Yul steps in and declares he will be the last competitor of the match.

Alchemy of Souls Episode 13 Musings

Vaunting another strong cliffhanger; the intensity of the narrative is falling in the right places in Alchemy of Souls. All the chess pieces in preparation for the culmination are set.

Right now, Wook and Yul are keen to do their best so as not to reveal Mu-deok’s identity. Albeit with different approaches, Mu-deok is lucky to have two reliable men to protect her.

Jin Mu reveals a key detail of how the soul ejector can’t work when it rains. He also confirms the immeasurable power of Bu-yeon who can even summon the energy of the skies. By the looks of it, as reflected by Mu-deok’s water power, their energy is blending well together.

It was also implied by Jin Mu that Bu-yeon was probably trying to destroy the ice stone and that made him push his niece to the river. It looks like the villains’ manipulations are going in their favor. Jin Mu is at the final stage of his evil plan and from there, we can assume that the war from a thousand years ago is likely to happen because of the different beliefs that people in Daeho want to follow.

Through Master Lee and Maidservant Kim’s chat, we also learned that Jang Gang and Naksu’s father are best friends. The former suffered emotionally when his wife died and his best friend fell into evil sorcery. Wook and Mu-deok’s connected fates seem to run deeper than the history of what their respective families share.

I can’t help but notice the character development of Prince Won, who we know would most likely play the dark horse in this series. His pondering hopefully leads him to discover Jin Mu’s evil deeds.

Will Mu-deok serve a new master? Did Wook really master “chisu”? Find out in the next episode of the series.
