The Divorce Insurance Episodes 3 and 4 Highlights

“It isn’t right at all. It will end up in divorce.”

Luckily for our team, people sign up for the divorce insurance policy. However, this is a double-edged weapon. If any couple gets divorced, the zero-divorce rate condition will be violated, and the company will incur a loss after paying the divorce payouts. So, Han-deul suggests they put all the contracts on hold and assess the couples before deciding on the eligible ones.

With the clock ticking, our team uses an AI tool and conducts a test on the team members first. Representing multi-divorced people, Ki-jun takes the test. But his facial expression changes when asked about the reason for his multiple divorces, suggesting we have a backstory here.

In a flashback, we see Ki-jun’s sister claim she wants to get divorced because she is unhappy in her marriage. Yet Ki-jun doesn’t think much of it and tells her to try harder. We don’t see what happens next, but the ominous vibe suggests something tragic might have happened to her. Ki-jun’s guilt over ignoring his sister’s sorrow might have made him bring up divorce first after sensing his ex-ex wife (the monk) isn’t happy in their marriage.

Nervous, Ki-jun questions if he made the right decision developing the divorce insurance or if it is just him meddling in other people’s lives. Comforting him, Han-deul urges Ki-jun to consider it an umbrella to shield them from the rain. After all, rain is an inevitable part of life.

“I dressed carefully for the client as a part of customer management.”

D-day comes, and our team is worried sick that the clients might not show up for the assessment. But luckily, people swarm over. After vetting the couples, the ones passing the screening process count high enough to meet the target, marking the beginning of the six-month pilot period.

Among the clients are the two in-laws (a mother of a bride and a mother of a groom) we met last week. Getting invited to the wedding, Ki-jun asks Han-deul to tag along. Ki-jun wants to take off once the ceremony starts, as he is allergic to weddings. But it takes longer than usual, and the guests start getting nervous since the bride and the groom are a no-show.

No need to worry, though. The marriage didn’t fall through. It is just that the couple are introverts who didn’t want a wedding but agreed to it for their mothers. Hearing that the mothers got a divorce insurance policy behind their backs, the couple settled to pull something too. Since it would be a shame not to use the limousine, the mothers treat Ki-jun and Han-deul to a ride home. They are uncomfortable accepting the offer and only agree when the mothers threaten to cancel the insurance.

“Just get your life back together. I don’t want to lose you, too.”

Hearing from Na-rae that 5 contracts got cancelled, Ki-jun parts ways with Han-deul. He needs to come up with a plan. But it didn’t cross our minds that Ki-jun would seek out his brother-in-law to sign up for a divorce insurance. Nothing is set in stone, but Ki-jun’s conversation with his brother-in-law implies that Ki-jun’s sister might have taken her life. The brother-in-law has been living in misery since then, blaming himself and feeling guilty over what happened. Yet Ki-jun doesn’t blame his brother-in-law but sincerely hopes he will move on.

In a montage, we see Ki-jun persistently reach out to his brother-in-law, though the latter mostly ignores him. This time, too, Ki-jun didn’t come to make up for the cancelled contracts but to check on his brother-in-law, asserting he didn’t want to lose him like he lost his sister. The divorce insurance was Ki-jun’s way of telling his brother-in-law it was okay to start over and then split ways if something went wrong.

“Thanks for giving me courage.”

Running into Han-deul on his way back (Ki-jun and Han-deul live in the same neighborhood), they hang out together since neither wants to stay home alone. During that sequence, we learn why Ki-jun and Na-rae got divorced. As Ki-jun argued before, they had different views on marriage. While Ki-jun believed a married couple should share everything, Na-rae believed marriage wasn’t her entire life, and she had the right to keep some things to herself.

Another one sharing the same point of view as Na-rae is Jeon-man, who also got divorced because he wanted his personal space. As things stand, it seems like the drama plans to hook up Jeon-man and Na-rae. And we couldn’t be more pleased by this pairing. Not only do they look good together, but it will also put any love triangle concerns to rest. On the outside, Na-rae and Jeon-man couldn’t look more different, but they complement each other well. Though Na-rae needs to give up on Ki-jun first and accept they can’t be together.

As we end this week, Ki-jun receives a call stating that the approval for the divorce insurance might get revoked due to a regulation violation, and he needs to show up for the investigation. Thus, getting him shocked. We don’t have all the details. But it is Na-rae and her superior’s doing. They seem to plot something related to the divorce insurance policy, and to cover their tracks, they used Ki-jun’s PC to share some intel related to the divorce insurance. And now an innocent Ki-jun is about to take the blame for it.

The Divorce Insurance Episodes 3 and 4 Musings

Two weeks in, and the drama remains fun, maintaining a good balance between humor and heartfelt moments without feeling over the top or getting too serious. We also appreciate that the drama revealed Ki-jun’s backstory and didn’t leave us to guess, helping us understand his character more.

Despite his upbeat personality, Ki-jun has had his fair share of suffering. So, we are glad to see him open up to Han-deul. After getting into incompatible marriages, those two have finally found someone they can be comfortable around. And it didn’t take any grand gestures. Just Ki-jun softly encouraging Han-deul to be brave and Han-deul helping Ki-jun get a quick nap when he dozed off at the cafe.

In a way, Ki-jun is drawn to Han-deul because she reminds him of his sister. He looks out for her to make up for what he couldn’t do for his sister. As it turns out, the knitting tools belonged to Ki-jun’s sister. And watching Han-deul knit, he asks her how to teach him how to knit to complete the unfinished product his sister was working on the last time he saw her. Hopefully, while working and knitting together, Ki-jun and Han-deul will grow closer and become something more than neighborhood buddies.
