K-DRAMA RECAP: “The Divorce Insurance” Episodes 9 and 10

In the penultimate week, our team overcomes a big hurdle and comes upon a tricky case that makes them question which course of action is better for their clients: convince them to stay together, albeit miserable, or help them part ways, even if it means trouble for our team.

Plenty of romantic sparks are also in the air to balance things out, with not only one but two romantic pairings sailing smoothly.

The Divorce Insurance Episodes 9 and 10 Highlights

“I hope the choice you make doesn’t lead to something worse.”

This week starts with confirming what we already know. Na-rae’s original plan was to steal the data and launch the divorce insurance through the China branch first. Then she would go up the ranks. But Na-rae’s superior betrayed her and sold the data to the rival company instead. As a result, the rival company got approval to launch its divorce insurance policy officially. And our team is about to be dissolved.

Worse yet, Han-deul is taken for questioning after signs of a data leak are found on her PC. (So, they used Han-deul as the scapegoat and not Ki-jun as we initially assumed.) To protect their colleague, the team tries to cross-check the access records and the security footage to find evidence that someone else logged in through Han-deul’s PC, yet only an executive can access this intel.

Turning to Na-rae for help, she gives Ki-jun the cold shoulder, asserting they should prepare to return to their teams instead of wasting time like this. Still, Na-rae checks the footage and the access records. Thus, learning that one of her superior’s minions accessed Han-deul’s PC.

At first, Na-rae resolved to keep it to herself. But after a conversation with Jeon-man, who overheard Na-rae’s conversation with her superior and connected the dots, Na-rae starts to come around. Confronting her superior, he is remorseless, urging Na-rae to stay put and turn a blind eye to whatever happens to the team. But Na-rae can’t sit idly by while others are suffering because of her actions.

Coming clean to the team and asking for forgiveness, everyone puts their heads together for a way to get out of this predicament. Luckily, they find proof that Han-deul wasn’t at the office that day and recognize the man from the footage. In return for sparing him, the minion hands over evidence incriminating Na-rae’s superior and the rival company president. Which Na-rae uses as a leverage to get the rival company president to pull out of the deal. Then, Na-rae’s superior gets taken by the audit team to pay for his crimes.

As much as we are happy to see our team back to their work, we can’t help but think that this whole arc was solved pretty quickly. Aside from giving Na-rae some growth, this arc didn’t serve any purpose. Perhaps, we could have gotten the same result with more interactions between Na-rae and the team. But what is done is done. For now, Na-rae gets suspended. But at least she isn’t alone and has Jeon-man by her side.

“We have to be fair and listen to both sides of the story.”

Our client of the week is a husband who wants to divorce his influencer wife as he can’t stand living with her anymore. On the outside, those two look like a perfect couple, but problems have been simmering beneath the surface for a while.

After failing to get pregnant, the wife was devastated, so the husband suggested she upload photos of their happy moments from time to time to get better. But instead of a hobby, this turned into an obsession for the wife, who is too busy uploading photos of every little detail of their life to notice the husband is suffering. Contrary to the husband, the wife doesn’t want a divorce. But it is palpable that she isn’t happy either. Both parties have their shortcomings, but neither wants to admit to it.

Our team shares different stances on how to handle this case. While some think this marriage can’t be mended, others are worried the divorce insurance might get discarded because of the zero divorce rate clause. The situation almost escalates into a fight. Yet after calming down, our team settles to offer their services to the couple without trying to influence their choice.

Luckily, the couple agrees to try out couples therapy before making the final decision. While the wife scribbles down a long list of things she wants to do with her husband, he only wants to spend a day together without their phones. So, off we go. Their outing goes initially well but soon the couple is yelling at each other so angrily that the wife blurts out they should end it all and the husband storms off.

Normally, Ki-jun would convince the husband to try harder, but recalling his sister’s situation, he resolves to respect the husband’s decision. Still, hope isn’t all lost for this couple. Sitting down for an honest conversation, they reminisce on their happy days and resolve to give it their all with the couples therapy, so they won’t have any regrets, no matter what decision they make.

“This moment is worth treasuring, so I want to take everything in.”

With some nudge from Jeon-man, Na-rae asks for permission to continue working on the divorce insurance policy until the launch. And everyone is happy to see her again. It is touching how Jeon-man doesn’t hold Na-rae’s actions against her but focuses on her courage to take responsibility for what she did. Hanging out together, Na-rae declares she wants to go all in and bet on Jeon-man, in a confession of sorts, getting him stunned. Though he doesn’t say anything, we can see Jeon-man is up for it and can’t be happier to date Na-rae.

Likewise, Ki-jun supports Han-deul to end things on a high note and announce at a family gathering that she got divorced. Earlier, Han-deul’s parents felt ashamed that their daughter was a divorcee and wanted her to get back with her husband. But Han-deul has no plans to do that. Why return to that trashy ex-husband when she has Ki-jun by her side? As we end this week, both ships are sailing smoothly. And all that is left is for Ah-young to admit her feelings too and get together with Woong-sik so that everyone will get their happy ending.

The Divorce Insurance Episodes 9 and 10 Musings

With most of the plotlines now resolved, next week will probably center on the official launch of the divorce insurance. It isn’t over until it is over, so we are slightly worried our team might come across another hurdle. Still, we have watched over them long enough to have faith that they can get over whatever obstacles that come their way.
