Bringing in some bribe, Joo-hee asks Hyun-jun a favor to use his kitchen so she can cook some healthy food for Chan-young. She also shares her opinion of his cold war with his girlfriend. It made Chan-young and Mi-jo later exasperated since they want her to take advantage of the time she can get closer to him.
Meanwhile, Jin-suk also leaves the house to move to a nearby hotel near Chan-young’s place against her wish to stay with his wife.
“They should have had another child aside from me. When I die, who will take care of their funerals?”
When the three friends meet later, Joo-hee declares what things to do together she has thought of. Dissatisfied with her proposed activities, Chan-young opens up her bucket list of finding a man for Joo-hee as well as finding Mi-jo’s birth mom.
Now that her closest circle knows her dying condition, Chan-young knows her parents should know it as well. However, when she visited them with Mi-jo, they can’t bring up her situation.
Fearing what her parents’ future holds, Mi-jo worries about who will take care of their funerals to which Mi-jo promised to commit.
After learning that Seon-woo is sick, Mi-jo goes to his place. She shares her experience and the fears she had as an adopted child. That makes Seon-woo understand So-won’s emotions. He also takes in her advice to be someone who can protect his sister.
Agreeing to meet with So-won for a dinner as his girlfriend, their plan meets an aberration when Seon-woo’s father also arrived at the clinic. So-won motions to leave but Mi-jo grabs her hand with a reassuring and silent everything will be okay look.
Thirty Nine Episode 5 Musings
Thirty Nine has not vaunted heavy crying scenes, but you can feel the genuine emotions in the agonizing scenes. One perfect example is that scene when Mi-jo and Chan-young found each other at the subway station and trace back how their friendship has since grown.
Chan-young’s explanation of how her situation made her worry about her parents, Joo-hee and Jin-seok – but made her miss Mi-jo solidifies how a state of friendship as pure as theirs is possible, and inspiring.
We can easily root for Chan-young’s two wishes for her two best friends. Hopefully, she can get past the pain of revealing the truth to her parents.
Giving insights about adopted children’s sentiments, especially those who are already adults, the series ruminates different outcomes that are inevitable to happen.
Fortunately for Mi-jo, she got a loving family – but for So-won while she has her adopted brother’s genuine love, her relationship with her adopted father was heartbreaking.
Keeping up its friendship-centered story, Thirty Nine continuously gives us life-affirming lessons. Right now, we can only ask for more.
